New Daniels Middle principal

We've got new principals for Daniels Middle School and Swift Creek Elementary School.

The school board just approved Elizabeth Battle as the new principal of Daniels Middle School. She replaces Stephen Mares, who is now principal of Broughton High.

Battle has been an assistant principal at Sanderson High since 2004. Here's an interesting tidbit. She's a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

We've got some comings and goings among principals and senior administrators.

Here's one a lot of you guys have been waiting for. Scott Lyons will become principal of Leesville Road High School in North Raleigh, replacing Stephen Gainey, who became assistant superintendent for human resources.

Lyons has been principal of Ligon Middle School since 2005. He used to be a teacher and assistant principal at Enloe High.

Node 337.3 out of luck

Node 337.3 is apparently out of luck for staying at Leesville Road High School.

School board member Patti Head asked about not moving the node to Millbrook High School. The problem was that it was caught up in the whole we're taking too many kids out of Millbrook High already argument.

The thought of losing another 76 kids slated to go to Millbrook didn't fly with the board. Sensing no support, Head didn't ask for a vote.

Head instead asked about redrawing the boundary lines for the node, as suggested by some parents, to allow some of those kids to stay at Leesville. Staff will review the idea and report back to the board.

New principals named

We've got four new principals tonight, including one for Broughton High School.

Stephen Mares will be Broughton's new principal. He's been principal of Daniels Middle School since 2005.

The start date at Broughton and the end date at Daniels hasn't been set yet.

Taylor Gentry earns Wolfpack scholarship

Former Leesville Road football standout Taylor Gentry has been awarded a scholarship at N.C. State, according to Leesville coach David Green.

Gentry, 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, played at State last season without a scholarship.

He played in all 13 games and caught seven passes for 72 yards.

Refugees and reassignment

Should the school board cut a reassignment break for refugees who fled from Myanamar?

As noted in today's column by Ruth Sheehan, the reassignment plan would move a node that includes a large group of Karen refugees who now live in North Raleigh. The move would create hardships for these families who, because they're largely low income, would be hard pressed to take advantage of transfer options.

"Political oppression and poverty chased these people halfway around the world. If only the Wake County School Board would let them put down roots — and stay," Ruth writes in the column.

Reassignment changes due to Broughton

It's clear that a lot of people are upset about the demagnetization of Broughton High School.

But as noted in today's article, there are probably going to be a number of people who are happy as well. Asst. Supt. Chuck Dulaney said demagnetizing Broughton and magnetizing Millbrook High will have ripple effects.

First, Dulaney said someone is going to have to be sent to Broughton to help make up for the eventual loss of the 600+ magnet students. He said that group will now likely be the students from the Brier Creek area of the US 70 corridor in northwest Raleigh.

Tonight's CEM meeting at Broughton

Parents who want to have their say at tonight's community engagement meeting at Broughton High School should really consider showing up early.

People can begin signing up to speak at 6 p.m., 30 minutes before the meeting starts. Based on the prior meetings, there's about enough time for 40 speakers at three minutes apiece.

Parents on both sides of the Broughton magnet issue are expected to grab several spots. Supporters of keeping the IB program at Broughton have begun  mobilizing in the past week to counter those who want the program gone.

Beating up on Millbrook High

Millbrook High School is taking a beating from parents at other schools during this reassignment season.

As noted in today's North Raleigh News article, parents complained about Millbrook during last week's community engagement meeting at Knightdale High. In particular, some Baileywick Elementary parents say changing the high school assignment from Leesville to Millbrook will have major repercussions.
