Lacy second look?

The Lacy Elementary reassignments could still be reversed.

School board member Beverley Clark has asked the board to revisit the Lacy votes during Wednesday evening's reassignment work session. She's pointing to new data presented by parents with warranting another look.

In a nutshell, the Lacy parents say that the board's decision to not make Stough the traditional-caledar option for Brier Creek leaves a small difference in the LI percentages between the two schools.

They're also questioning the capacity figures used to say that Lacy is overcrowded.

Lacy still going to Stough

The school board has agreed this morning to largely keep the Lacy Elementary moves intact in the plan.

The only change is to drop the reassignment of Node 106 from Lacy to Root Elementary. Depending on the numbers you use, there's either one kid or 23 kids in that node.

All the other Lacy nodes are going to Root. All three Lacy nodes are going to Stough.

It looks like, for now at least, the Stough parents have won the fight.

Arguing over the Lacy moves

It’s probably not a surprise, but the talk about Lacy Elementary School took up a good chunk of Thursday’s reassignment discussion.

Many of the questions focused on the accuracy of the growth projections for Lacy. There were also a lot of questions about how to assess comparability, a major factor in Wake’s reassignment policy.

Here’s the quick summary.

Opposing the Lacy moves

We got a taste last night of how Lacy Elementary parents are arguing they shouldn't be reassigned to Stough Elementary.

During last night's hearing at Fuquay-Varina High, Hunt Choi argued that there was no need to reassign Lacy students to Stough or Root Elementary. Previously, the Lacy parents have been talking with school board members in private.

Choi argued that Lacy wasn't overcrowded, one of the reasons given for moving students out of the school. He said the school district's growth projections for the school are too high.

Praising the reassignment plan

Thursday's reassignment public hearing wasn't a normal one.

As noted in today's article, nearly half of the 16 speakers spoke in support of the reassignment plan. Some speakers backed the conversion of Leesville Road Middle School to a year-round calendar. Ohers praised the reassignment of Lacy Elementary students to Stough Elementary.

The Stough parents argued that the school would become healthier if it got the Lacy students. They also said it would ease crowding at Lacy.
