'The Closer' ending after next season

Kyra Sedgwick, the star of one of basic cable's most popular series, has decided to go out on top.

Sedgwick announced today through TNT that she has made the decision to end 'The Closer' after next season, putting the show at 103 episodes and making it eligible for syndication. Sedgwick, who plays LAPD Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, won an Emmy for her work this year after being nominated five times.

The production of the final 15 episodes of 'The Closer' will begin in the spring of 2011 and shown later that year.

"The Closer" returns with a few changes for Season 6

You can't help but notice some changes when you tune in for the Season 6 premiere of "The Closer" tonight on TNT.

The primary difference is that the Major Case Squad has been moved into a fancy new high-tech building, which the detectives don't want and can't use. Brenda (Kyra Sedgwick) calls the $10 million state-of-the-art headquarters an "obstacle course," and much to the chagrin of Chief Pope (J.K. Simmons), she and the gang spend much of the episode trying to retrofit it to be more like their old digs.

I get the feeling that watching the detectives fumble around with sliding screens and complicated phone systems will be a running theme this season.

What to Watch on Monday: "Jon & Kate" wraps up NC trip

Teen Choice Awards (8pm, Fox) - The Jonas Brothers host and perform at this 11th annual awards show honoring entertainment, sports, and fashion. Miley Cyrus appears, naturally. And Britney Spears receives the Ultimate Choice Award. Tons of celebrities will appear, ranging from Jordin Sparks to Hugh Jackman.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire (8pm, ABC) - Night two. Celebrity contestant is Vanessa Williams, celebrity lifeline is George Stephanopoulos

Jon & Kate Plus 8 (9pm, TLC) - Kate and the kids wrap up their North Carolina vacation and return home to their renovated kitchen.

The Closer (9pm, TNT) - A dead body is shipped to the police station in a large box, and Brenda's visiting niece (played by Sosie Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick's real life daughter with husband Kevin Bacon) stirs up trouble.

Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List (10pm, Bravo) - In the season 5 finale, Kathy learns she's going to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. That is, if you consider Palm Springs to be the same as Hollywood.

The Closer: Why did they have to kill off Kitty?

I knew there was trouble Tuesday morning when someone called to tell me that if I hadn't seen Monday night's episode of "The Closer" yet, don't watch it.

I guessed immediately what had happened: Kitty had died.

The first two episodes of this season's "The Closer" gave us troubling glimpses of Kitty's declining health, with Brenda and Fritz fussing over her, taking her for vet visits, and even giving her IVs in Brenda's office. So we sort of knew it was coming, right?

"HawthoRNe": A weak entry to the TNT strong woman tribe

The first problem with TNT's "HawthoRNe" (tonight at 9) is that it's spelled that way, with the big RN for registered nurse and someone thought that was clever.

In guess you didn't get it, the show is about nurses, and Jada
Pinkett Smith (who, by the way, studied for a time at the NC School of the Arts) plays Christina Hawthorne, the chief nursing officer at a hospital in Richmond, Va.

She's recently widowed, left with a daughter. Luckily the nursing staff she supervises is like family.

Michael Vartan, the cutie from "Alias" plays an oncologist and chief of surgery.

"The Closer" returns, but will Sanchez?

The Closer, Monday January 26, 9pm, TNT

The Closer, starring Kyra Sedgwick, returns tonight for the second half of its fourth season, and the big question involves the fate of Det. Sanchez (Raymond Cruz). In the cliffhanger at the end of the first half of the season, Sanchez took some bullets while saving the life of Lt. Provenza, and the show ended with things not looking so good for Julio. . . .
