Gaffney sets new county mark

Kristen Gaffney needed 12 points to make history Wednesday night -- and she wasted no time in doing it.

The Green Hope senior girls basketball player became Wake County's all-time leader in points -- among N.C. High School Athletic Association member schools -- in the first quarter of a 75-46 defeat of visiting Wilson Hunt.

Gaffney made a layup with 2:41 left in the first, and the game was paused for the announcement and recognition of the feat. Green Hope athletics director Wayne Bragg said that the game ball will be retired.

Gaffney joins 2,000-point club

Kristen Gaffney joined elite company on Tuesday.

The Green Hope senior and Vanderbilt recruit scored her 2,000th point in the third quarter in the Falcons' 51-44 win against Holly Springs. Gaffney scored 18 in the win and now has 2,006 in her career.

Gaffney selects Vanderbilt

Green Hope's Kristen Gaffney, one of the state's top girls basketball players, will play for one of the nation's premier collegiate programs.

The senior forward has verbally committed to Vanderbilt, she announced Wednesday.

"I chose Vanderbilt because I know coach (Melanie Balcomb) and her staff will push me to the absolute max so I can become the best player I can be," Gaffney said in a prepared statement.

Gaffney down to seven schools

Rising senior Kristen Gaffney, a girls basketball standout at Green Hope, is down to seven schools and should take at least one visit to each before making a final decision by July 30, according to her father.

Gaffney makes coaches' all-state

Kristen Gaffney of Green Hope is the only junior chosen by the N.C. Basketball Coaches Association for its all-state girls basketball first team. Ariel Bursey of Western Harnett was a second-team pick.

Among the boys, Siler City Jordan-Matthews' James Milliken is a second-team pick and Princeton's Ben Jacobs and Garner's Donald Johnson are on the third team.

Gaffney named AP all-state

Kristen Gaffney of Green was named to the Associated Press all-state girls basketball team as selected by sports writers throughout the state. South Central Pitt's Danielle Butts and Janesha Ebron also were selected.

Terry Whisnant of Cherryville and Tyler Lewis of Forsyth Country Day lead the boys team.
