A Valentine giveaway for my readers: Coupons for FREE doughnuts

Remember those Valentine's Day cards that double as coupons for FREE Krispy Kreme doughnuts that I wrote about here last week?

Well, I've got a dozen of those cards to give away to one Centsible Saver reader.

Since I can't send the doughnuts through the mail, I thought I'd send the next best thing.

App tracks nearby Krispy Kreme "Hot Now" lights

Want to be alerted the second your nearest Krispy Kreme turns on its "Hot Now" light? There's an app for that.

Barkley, a Kansas City-based marketing firm, developed an app that tracks when a participating Krispy Kreme shop has its hot light on, signaling that fresh doughnuts rolling off the glazing rack.

The app, which is available for iPhones and Android phones, allows users to search for nearby "Hot Now" lights and program how frequently they'd like to receive notifications. The app is also available as a desktop widget.

"Genuine engagement that is useful to our guests is key to our social media strategy," said Dwayne Chambers, chief marketing officer for Winston-Salem based Krispy Kreme, in a statement. "This unique Hot Light app is one more way we can share the one-of-a kind Krispy Kreme experience with our fans."

The app is available as a free download at KrispyKreme.com/hotlightapp, the Android Market and the iTunes store.

Doughnuts at N&O Friday

You might not know that Friday is National Doughnut Day. Come by The N&O office in downtown Raleigh Friday from 8 to 10 am, have a doughnut and some coffee and chat with N&O staff members (including World Famous Coupon Queen Sue Stock). We will gather on our front lawn at 215 S. McDowell St. We will move inside if it rains. The first 200 people are guaranteed coffee and doughnuts.

I'll be there for part of the time so you can tell me about how we are biased against your school's sports program. Or whatever else is on your mind.

If you like hot, fresh doughnuts NOW, you might know that the Krispy Kreme on Person Street re-opened this week. Some camped out Monday night to be among the first in line when the store opened Tuesday morning. Click here for Leah Friedman's report.

Raleigh Krispy Kreme to reopen June 1

The "Hot Now" light at the downtown Raleigh Krispy Kreme will flicker back on in the early hours of Tuesday, June 1.

The store, which is the only one in the Triangle where doughnuts are actually made, has been shuttered for a month while it underwent renovations. Area die-hards have been left buying cold doughnuts from the stores in Raleigh's City Plaza and in Knightdale in the meantime.

The store on Person Street will reopen on June 1 at 6 a.m. The first person in line will receive one dozen doughnuts a week for a year. In addition, someone who is in line before 5:30 a.m. will be chosen at random to flip the switch on the store's iconic "Hot Now" sign.

Krispy Kreme to sell treats at Panthers games

Carolina Panthers fans will now find a Krispy Kreme fix at home games.

Homegrown doughnut maker Krispy Kreme announced this morning a three-season sponsorship deal with the professional football team. The arrangement includes the right to sell the company's sweet stuff at Charlotte's Bank of America stadium.

Krispy Kreme to open in downtown Raleigh

Come this fall, Krispy Kreme will sell its sugary sweets to downtown workers and tourists from a new store on Fayetteville Street.

The company has confirmed plans to open a Neighborhood Shop in one of the four 900-square-foot "pavilion" buildings flanking the new City Plaza.

The store will be the second Neighborhood Shop opened by the doughnut company in the Triangle this year, following the opening of one in Knightdale's Shoppes at Midway Plantation that is coming up on Monday.

However, don't look for the Hot Now sign downtown. Neighborhood Shops offer a full range of Krispy Kreme products but do not make doughnuts on-site. Instead the other Raleigh store on Person Street will provide doughnuts for all three locations.

Kripsy Kreme says the new downtown Raleigh store will open at the end of October.
