Martin Street Baptist Church showing "Koch Brothers Exposed" tonight

The Coalition of Concerned Citizens for African American Children and Martin Street Baptist Church are getting distinctly political tonight with a showing of a documentary attacking the Koch brothers.

In a Sunday email message on the CCCAAC listserv, CCCAAC President Calla Wright invites people to attend the screening of "Koch Brothers Exposed" that's being sponsored and shown at Martin Street Baptist.

Liberal filmmaker Robert Greenwald has produced a series of short documentaries, now compiled into one long one, attacking the conservative Koch brothers. Greenwald came out with a film last year that tried to link the 2009 election of the Republican majority to the Wake County school board to Charles and David Koch.

Great Schools in Wake Coalition activist slams school choice in national article

A member of the Great Schools in Wake Coalition is quoted in a article critical of school choice.

In an article originally published by Alternet, a liberal online newsmagazine, GSIW member Karey Harwood charges that school choice supporters are out to create a "divided society of winners and losers." The article, originally titled "5 Biggest Lies About the Right-Wing Corporate-Backed War on Our Schools" was reposted Tuesday by Salon.com for National School Choice Week.

"When they talk about choice, whose choices are they referring to?" Harwood says in the article. "Are the children of people who are savvy enough to get out of the public schools the only children who are worth educating in our society? What happens to the children who don’t get out?"

Rachel Maddow on the "really important consequences" of the Wake County school board election results

Rachel Maddow cheered the return of a Democratic majority to the Wake County school board election as "a small-sounding election tonight with really, really important consequences."

Tuesday on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show," the liberal commentator said that "Wake County schools' elections have had national implications and been of national interest ever since Republicans last year on that board moved to abolish one of the nation's most celebrated racial integration policies."

"The anti-integration Republican majority elected two years ago was supported by Americans for Prosperity, which as you know is the conservative activist group funded by the Koch brothers," Maddow said. "But as of tonight's election results in Wake County, North Carolina, that work has been overturned by the voters of Wake County. A small-sounding election tonight with really, really important consequences."

Liberal groups have argued that the 2009 election of a new Republican school board majority was the work of conservatives such as the Koch brothers. Supporters of the now-outgoing board majority have denied the charge.

Huffington Post calls school board elections "a harbinger of a populist surge"

The Huffington Post is calling the Wake County school board election results "a populist backlash" against Art Pope, the Koch brothers and the Tea Party movement.

In a column today for the liberal Huffington Post, Michael Carmichael writes that "Pope's ultra-conservative ticket fell under the crushing weight of a populist uprising merged with a Democratic steamroller in the highly anticipated elections for Wake County School Board."

"Knowledgeable political observers in Wake County believe that the majority of the school board will return to Democratic control when Kevin Hill's runoff is held on November 8th," writes Carmichael, a Visiting Scholar at Duke University. "If those predictions prove correct, Hill's election will bring to an end two harrowing years of reactionary radicalism and re-segregation led by Pope and his now defeated henchman, Ray (sic) Margiotta."

Wake GOP accuses Democrats of overlooking school board's accomplishments

Republicans and Democrats are going after each other in another round of squabbling about the Wake County school board elections.

In this week's issue of the Elephant Express, Wake County Republican Party Chairwoman Susan Bryant responds to state Democratic Party Chairman David Parker's Aug. 20 call to action to his party's members.

Parker blames the changes in Wake schools on the "vicious fanaticism" of those carrying on Jesse Helms' legacy. In the process, Parker invokes the Tea Party, the Koch brothers and Wake County Commissioners Chairman Paul Coble.

Koch brothers call allegations of Wake school board involvement "falsehoods"

The Koch brothers are responding directly to the charges they were involved in the 2009 Wake County school board elections, saying the accusations are "false," "ugly and baseless."

In this post today on KochFacts.com, the Koch brothers say no money was donated in 2009 to Wake school board candidate by family members or the company's political action committee.

"The Wake County School Board claim is not a new one and has been debunked, most notably by Newsweek earlier this year and in the Washington Post," according to KochFacts.com. "'Partisan “progressive' activists recently have resurrected the tale and further embellished the ugly and baseless racial charge. This unfortunate but increasingly common political tactic is apparently intended to stigmatize opponents even if the underlying accusation is completely false."

MSNBC trying to link Koch brothers to school board elections through AFP support to Wake CARES

Do 2007 donations from the state chapter of Americans for Prosperity to Wake CARES during the mandatory year-round lawsuit constitute grounds for linking the conservative Koch brothers to the 2009 Wake County school board elections?

That's how the left-wing cable news network MSNBC is trying to tie the Koch brothers to the new school board majority that ended the diversity policy. It was part of a segment on Wake County schools titled "Repealing the 20th Century" that aired Thursday night on MSNBC's "The Last Word" show.

"Now there are multiple reports directly or indirectly linking the Koch brothers — those mysterious right-wing billionaires behind the Astroturf-group Americans for Prosperity — to the Republican school board members who are actively pushing to resegregate Wake County schools," said Melissa Harris-Perry, the show's guest host. "To be fair, it's not entirely clear just how much money the Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity put behind the candidates in 2009."
