DWTS: A KISS-off instead of a dance-off

Lenni G reports on last night's elimination show, which surprisingly, lacked the promised "dance-off":

KISS was back to help "Kiss somebody goodbye." So clever.  Not so clever: Melissa Gilbert's concussion which had her missing the show after her doctors ordered her to take a rest day. This does not sound good people. Maks admitted that he had hurt his arm but felt it took away from the pain in his ankles, knees and shoulders. This does not sound good either. By the way, huge props to Gavin who picked the injured Melissa up and carried her down the stairs to the medics.

We had our first encore dance of the season and it was Donald and Peta with their fantastic paso doble. Loved Tom Bergeron's comment that, "You just watched two people with a grand total of 3% body fat." True, absolutely true. On to the results...

Give a kiss, Get a BOGO deal at Qdoba

Qdoba Mexican Grill will be celebrating Valentine's Day with a BOGO deal. No coupon required -- just a kiss.

Qdoba customers who purchase one entree on Tuesday, Feb. 14, will get a second entree free when they kiss someone in the restaurant.

It would probably be best to bring someone along to score this deal, but Qdoba suggests "an understanding stranger at the cash register" is not out of bounds.

I love a company with a sense of humor.

Weekend detours for Walnut Creek concerts

This will be a big weekend for concerts at Walnut Creek -- Creed on Friday, Brad Paisley on Saturday and Kiss on Sunday -- which is going to mean traffic snarls all three nights because road work is continuing on I-440 West between the I-40 East/I-440 split and Poole Road, with the Poole Road exit ramp from I-440 West closed. So alternate routes are advised:

Going to the concert from westbound I-40, take Jones Sausage Road to Rock Quarry Road.

After the concert, if you're using Rock Quarry Road and need to get on I-440 West, take Rock Quarry Road to New Hope Road to Poole Road to I-440 West; or Rock Quarry Road to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to Poole Road to I-440 West.

After the concert, if you're using Rock Quarry Road and need to get on I-40, take Rock Quarry Road to Jones Sausage Road to I-40 East; or Rock Quarry Road to I-40 West.

After the concert, if you're using Sunnybrook Road, go north to Poole Road to access I-440.

Mike Farris is no kiss-up

In recent years, it's become fashionable to reassess the band Kiss' place in the world and declare them to be underrated, or at least under-appreciated. But Mike Farris, formerly of Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies and currently fronting an amazing gospel ensemble, is having none of it.

"When I was really little, my brother had Kiss albums," he said in a recent interview. "So guess what, Kiss was the greatest band on earth in my house. Then I got a little older and figured out, 'Wow, this is actually pretty [expletive].' Time went on and I had a kid myself. My managers had a radio-promo company, too, so every month I'd get a big stack of CDs. There was a Kiss CD in there once, with a crazy cover that'd get the attention of a 4-year-old -- and it did just that. My son asked, 'These guys any good?' He was little bitty and I didn't want to tell him it sucked, so I said I didn't know. So I go away, come back a week later and he asks, 'You know that Kiss thing? They're really bad, aren't they?' He saw right through that immediately."

For more on Farris' latest musical doings, plus details on his Saturday night show in Clayton, see the interview in Friday's paper.
