Two ex-Canes make coaching moves

Kevyn Adams took a major step forward in his post-hockey career, moving from the Buffalo Sabres' front office to the bench as an assistant coach on Tuesday. The Buffalo-area native, who played on both the 2002 and 2006 Hurricanes teams, retired in 2008.

Nolan Pratt, who played for the Hurricanes from 1997-2000, was hired as an assistant coach for Springfield (AHL) by the Columbus Blue Jackets earlier this week.

Mystery man in net

The Hurricanes had an unexpected goalie for their first week of informal skating sessions at the RecZone, and he was no slouch.

Jeff Zatkoff, a third-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings in 2006 who played for the United States at the World Junior Championships, joined the current and former Hurricanes on the ice this week, with usual practice goalie Jorge Alves in the other net.

Talking Points: Adams waits and wonders

From Talking Points:

Today’s Sports 2.0 feature on ex-Canes coming to the end of their careers included a quote from Kevyn Adams, who at 34 is considering his hockey future. One of the most popular fourth-liners ever to play for the Canes, he’s in a tough spot.

He’s facing some of the toughest questions an athlete can ask himself, including the big one: Is it over?

“Every athlete faces it at some point,” Adams said. “I’m not going to be the kind of guy that fights it. I know I can play, but if the writing’s on the wall, the writing is on the wall, right or wrong. Whether it’s 34 or 35 or 36, there’s no sense fighting it.”

UPDATE: Bret Hedican has signed with the Anaheim Ducks.
