What to Watch on Tuesday: The 2011 Kennedy Center Honors

Texas Multi Mamas (8pm, We) - A new reality show that follows a group of Texas mothers of multiple babies (like twins, triplets, etc). I can't think of anything I'd personally rather watch less, but it's a slow TV night, so there you are...

Belk Bowl: NC State vs. Louisville (8pm, ESPN) - The Wolfpack takes on Louisville in Charlotte. Go Pack!

Kennedy Center Honors (9pm, CBS) - Maybe my single favorite TV show of the year. This year, Meryl Streep, Neil Diamond, Yo-Yo Ma, Sonny Rollins and Barbara Cook are saluted. Performers and presenters include James Taylor, Bill Cosby, Robert DeNiro, Herbie Hancock, Anne Hathaway, Mike Nichols, Lionel Richie, and Smokey Robinson.

A Cook's Tour (9:30pm, Cooking) - Anthony Bourdain hits Singapore.

Bomb Patrol: Afghanistan (10pm, G4) - In the season finale, Brad, Ricky and Chase must reach soldiers who are trapped in a damaged vehicle amid a firefight with the Taliban.

Rudolph's Shiny New Year (8pm, ABC) - Red Skelton narrates this cartoon classic about Rudolph's special mission for Santa. Features the voices of Frank Gorshin and Morey Amsterdam and the classic song, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."

True Blood (8pm, HBO) - The Season 3 marathon continues...

Kennedy Center Honors (9pm, CBS) - My favorite show of the year! Paul McCartney, Merle Haggard, Oprah Winfrey, Jerry Herman, and Bill T. Jones are the honorees at the 33rd annual celebration, hosted by Caroline Kennedy. Performers and presenters include Julia Roberts, Vince Gill, James Taylor, Willie Nelson, Sidney Poitier, Alec Baldwin, Chris Rock, Steven Tyler, John Travolta, Barbara Walters, Kris Kristofferson, and Angela Landsbury.

Glory Daze (10pm, TBS) - Joel tries to snap out of his passion for Christie, only to go on a hellish date. Then Brian tries to connect with Annabel and Eli becomes obsessed with the military after watching "Top Gun."

Highlights from the 2009 "Kennedy Center Honors"

The Kennedy Center Honors broadcast is always one of the best shows of the year. On Tuesday night we saw tributes to Robert Deniro, Bruce Springsteen, Mel Brooks, Dave Brubeck, and Grace Bumbry.

All of the tributes were fantastic, but my favorite moment was Jon Stewart's introduction of The Boss. Perfection. You can watch a little bit of that intro below (it's a shame the entire segment isn't available). Also interesting is this feature on Springsteen's induction and an interview with CBS's Julie Chen (here's the second part of that interview).

Five coolest moments in the CBS Kennedy Center Honors show

I am a complete sucker for The Kennedy Center Honors show. For me, this is always one of the best bits of TV entertainment of the year. Here are my top five favorite moments of Tuesday's show.

5/ Roger Daltrey nearly coming out of his seat with excitement at the introduction of blues musician Pinetop Perkins, there to perform for fellow Mississippian Morgan Freeman.

4/ Bettye Lavette singing The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me."

3/ Everything else in The Who's tribute.

2/ George Jones wiping away a tear when Brad Paisley sang "Bartender's Blues." (Tied with Alan Jackson's chill-bumpy rendition of Jones's "He Stopped Loving Her Today.")

1/ Dignified CBS news anchor Bob Schieffer caught on camera cupping his hands around his mouth and letting out a hearty "woooooo!" for George Jones. (Almost as good as the year we got to see Colin Powell dancing to Kid Rock's rendition of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting.")

The Kennedy Center Honors is consistently one of the best television shows of the year, and because it's always on at such a busy time, sometimes it can sneak right under your radar. So go ahead and set your DVRs now so that you don't miss these tributes.

This year the honorees are Morgan Freeman, George Jones, Barbara Streisand, Twyla Tharp, and Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey of The Who.
