Glance thanks N.C. State for opportunity

Prepared statement from Stephanie Glance:

I would like to thank NC State University for affording me the chance to be a part of such a fine institution for the last 15 years. I am saddened today that I will not have the opportunity to be the next head coach for the women's basketball program. I would like to especially thank the fans, former players, and coaches from around the country who have sent letters, emails, and made phone calls on my behalf. Thank you sincerely for your  support!

I am MOST grateful for the lessons learned from the legendary Coach Kay Yow! These will stay with me for a lifetime!

I wish her successor the best.

Oblinger's State of N.C. State speech

N.C. State Chancellor James Oblinger authored his second state-of-the-university address today, speaking for more than 30 minutes on topics ranging from the budget crunch to a recently-concluded, $1 billion fundraising campaign.

You can watch the speech here, or read the transcript by clicking on the attachment below.

Among Oblinger's shout-outs, the chancellor recognized notable alums like Robert Gibbs - the new White House Press Secretary - and Cullen Jones, an Olympic swimming gold medalis.

He also noted that the ongoing budget crisis may force NCSU to shave up to $36 million from its budget, a reduction that will may force layoffs.

He also mentioned Kay Yow, NCSU's women's basketball coach who recently succumbed to cancer.

"You know that her presence will be felt at N.C. State for a long time to come," he said, according to the transcript. "While we are sad at her passing, I think I speak for everyone who knew her - or knew of her - when I say the greatest loss is the succession of student athletes and community members who will not get to know Kay Yow. N.C. State remembers."

Talking Points: A Yow postscript

From Talking Points:

It's a little late for this little anecdote, which never made our coverage of her death or funeral, but it's worth telling because it offers a little insight into the passion Yow brought to everything she did, and how persuasive her infectious enthusiasm could be.

About two weeks before Yow died, I spoke with Pat Summitt, the legendary Tennessee women's coach, about Yow. In the middle of our conversation, she told me a story about the two working together on the 1984 women's Olympic team, and how Yow got Summitt started on a habit that would stick for life.
