City, county have holiday plans

Durham's two local governments have plans for the July 4 weekend: take Monday off.

Since Independence Day falls on a Sunday this year, most city and county offices are closing July 5, with some exceptions and variations:

  • Public libraries are closing July 3 through 5;
  • Social Services offices are closed, but neglect, abuse and/or exploitation may be called in to 911;
  • Durham Center Access, the mental-health, disability and addiction crisis center, stays open as usual;
  • Buses are running a regular Monday schedule on July 5;
  • City garbage, recycling, yard trash and bulky-item collection is moved back one day all week (Monday customers get pickup on Tuesday, etc.);
  • The city's trash transfer station and hazardous waste collection point are closing July 3 through 5; Durham County's trash and recycling convenience centers are closed then as well;
  • City rec centers are closing July 4 and 5, but outdoor pools and lake-access areas are remaining open;
  • Durham One Call won't be answering on July 5, but service requests may be left as voicemails at 560-1200 or at www.DurhamNC.gov/departments/onecall.
