TROSA closing East Durham grocery

Almost two years after its celebratory opening, TROSA's grocery store on Angier Avenue is going out of business. The Durham nonprofit made the announcement this afternoon.

According to a TROSA statement, the store's revenue has not been enough to cover costs, even with TROSA's own subsidy and private donations.

"The decision to close the store has not been an easy one, as the store has had a positive impact in the East Durham community and has become an important resource for community members," the statement read.

A date and other closing details have not been set.

The TROSA store is next to the popular Joe's Diner at Angier Avenue and Driver Street. Entrepreneur Joseph Bushfan bought and renovated three adjacent buildings in the hope of reviving the long-depressed business district around that corner.

Bushfan hot dogs picked for State Fair

Durham entrepreneur Joseph Bushfan, who operates Joe's Diner ("Home of the one-pound hot dog") at Angier Avenue and Driver Street, will be working the State Fair midway next month.

Bushfan (right), who is married to Durham District Court Judge Elaine Bushfan, said Wednesday he's been picked as a State Fair vendor, along with the usual purveyors of turkey legs, roast corn and deep-fried candy bars.

"They really bought not only the product, but they really liked Joseph's story, where he has come from and what he and Elaine are doing," said Durham businessman Dan Hill, who is a finacial backer of Bushfan's effort to uplift the run-down and crime-plagued area of Northeast Central Durham.

"He is very excited, and should be," Hill said. "That's one of the things that can really jumpstart a business."

For his part, Bushfan said, "Business is going great." Besides Joe's Diner, his Superlative Fine Foods has opened a cafe and grocery at the Angier/Driver corner and he has a concession to sell his hot dogs (not just full-pound size) on Duke's East Campus and at Duke football games.

He's expecting a very good weekend with Alabama coming to town. He's going to have a stand at the Crimson Tide fans' tailgate area.

"It's kind of busy," Bushfan said.

TROSA grocery opening at Angier/Driver corner

TROSA, Durham's entrepreneurial program for overcoming addictions, holds a grand opening for its new grocery store on May 13.

The grocery, at 2104 Angier Avenue, is part of the community uplift business project that Joseph Bushfan has started at the Driver Street-Angier Avenue corner -- one of Durham's roughest.

Bushfan opened a restaurant and community room at the corner in January.

According to TROSA, Mayor Bill Bell is coming to cut a ceremonial ribbon at 11:30 a.m. opening day. The agency is bringing its house band along, too.
