Heine, Quick make commitments
Submitted by ewarnock on 02/01/2012 - 13:55Today is National Signing Day, when high school athletes from fall sports make their official commitments to college teams.
While several high school seniors who play Olympic sports are signing as well, much of the emphasis for many schools is placed on football programs.
Locally, offensive lineman William Heine of East Chapel Hill has committed to Georgetown and Chapel Hill's R.J. Quick has signed on for Winston-Salem State.
Heine, a 6-5, 280-pound senior played at right tackle for East, helping to protect record-setting QB Drew Davis in coach Bill Renner's "five-wide" offense. Heine will be joining his brother James at Georgetown, who's a pitcher for the Hoyas' baseball team.
Quick, not the biggest Tiger at 5-11, 180 pounds, was still one of the biggest guns as a top receiver for coach Issac Marsh as CHHS went 10-3 last season. He was also one of the quickest, no pun intended, with 4.5 speed.
The University of North Carolina is announcing its commitments — including Phil Williamson of Jordan — from the Class of 2012 this afternoon. See UNC Now (http://blogs.newsobserver.com/uncnow) for the latest on Carolina's recruits, and ACC Now (http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/home) for updates on Duke and N.C. State.

Jordan takes lead in Wachovia Conference Cup standings
Submitted by ewarnock on 03/22/2011 - 12:48After the completion of a successful winter sports season, Jordan High School has taken over the lead in the Piedmont Athletic 4-A standings for the annual Wachovia Conference Cup.
Jordan won the Piedmont Athletic 4-A Conference championship in men’s basketball and delivered second-place performances in men’s and women’s swimming to earn 60 points. Second-place East Chapel Hill (55.5), the leader in fall sports, swept the PAC-6 swimming championships.
Northern Durham (50.5) moved into third after finishing first in wrestling and women’s basketball. Riverside (49) is fourth, followed by Roxboro Person (29.5), Southern Durham (25) and Hillside (23.5).
The Wachovia Cup award recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
The Wachovia Conference Cup is a companion to the Wachovia Cup. The Conference Cup is awarded to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each individual conference. Points are awarded based upon final standings for each sport in each conference.
In the Carolina 1/2-A, Carrboro High School holds a top spot in the Wachovia Conference Cup standings after the NCHSAA’s winter season. After a championship in men’s swimming and a runner-up finish in women’s swimming, Carrboro has 84.5 points, followed closely behind by Cedar Ridge.
Cedar Ridge finished second in men’s basketball and third in wrestling, and now has 81.5 points. Men’s basketball conference champion Northwood is in third with 77 points. The N.C. School of Science and Math (73.5) and Durham School of the Arts (63) round out the Carolina 1/2-A's top five, followed by Raleigh Charter (56), South Granville (44), Granville Central (41.5), River Mill (27), Roxboro Community (10).

Winless Greensboro Grimsley turned over the ball six times — including twice on kickoffs — to set up Jordan for the Falcons’ second straight win, 18-13 Friday night over the visiting Whirlies. UNC signee T.J. Thorpe caught 11 passes for 141 yards, including TDs of 30 and 6 yards.
Sam Selig’s 8-yard pass to Josh Williams gave Jordan (3-1) a 12-0 lead going into halftime.
Grimsley (0-4) managed to claw back within a touchdown twice on touchdown passes from Jake Simpson to Treyvon Woods (11 yards) in the third quarter and Tuquis Turner (25 yards) in the fourth quarter.
The Falcons (3-1) closed the deal on Selig’s 6-yard pass to Thorpe early in the fourth quarter.
Grimsley never got closer to the end zone after that than the Jordan 43.
Panther Creek 30, Jordan 14

This year's squad -- full of talented seniors -- wanted to make their road woes a thing of the past. The Catamounts did just that Friday night, getting 129 total yards and two touchdowns from running back Jonathan Douglas and eventually pulling away late from Durham Jordan 30-14.
