Truitt changes her view of Tedesco

How Cathy Truitt went from saying that John Tedesco would resegregate the school system to now endorsing him is an interesting story.

As noted in today's article, Truitt said she changed her mind after speaking with Tedesco on Tuesday night. But Tedesco says he didn't tell her anything different from what he has said during the campaign.

Let's go back in time to Monday.

UPDATED POST

Quick recap of the press conference

To say that today's press conference was a 180 from Monday's event would be an understatement.

Cathy Truitt said she's endorsing John Tedesco after meeting with him Tuesday night and coming away assured that he won't resegregate the schools.

Truitt is offering to reimburse the county's expenses for the runoff by offering in-kind services as an education consultant to the community.

Truitt and Tedesco to do joint appearance today

For those who think that Cathy Truitt is doing a fake withdrawal from the school board race, the Wake County GOP is announcing that she and John Tedesco will do a joint appearance today.

A press release is expected around 11 a.m. But here's the GOP announcementL

Wake schools signing up for EVAAS

Wake is now jumping into using the EVAAS program.

As noted in today's article, administrators said they're moving to get passwords into the hands of principals and other school personnel. It's a change from when a school had to request access to EVAAS to be signed up.

Wake still has a long way to go to catch up with other school districts in terms of using the program, which is free of charge to districts.

New board members at COW meeting

The transition from campaigning to governing is moving forward on the school board.

Newly elected board member Debra Goldman and candidate John Tedesco are both at today's committee of the whole meeting. Tedesco will officiallly move into the candidate elect status as long as his supporters make sure to show up Nov. 3 to vote in the runoff.

The COW agenda is not really controversial. One of the items is a discussion of what Wake would like to change in No Child Left Behind.

Truitt announcement conspiracy theory

The conspiracy theories are flying about Cathy Truitt's announcement today that she's conceding the school board race.

Some people think it's a ploy designed to discourage John Tedesco's supporters from coming out on Nov. 3 so that she can win, or at least have the current school board fill the seat. Truitt says those theories are ridiculous.

Here's the background from today's online story:

Wake GOP praises Truitt for stepping down

The Wake County Republican Party is declaring victory in the District 2 school board race.

In the press release, Wake GOP Chairman Claude Pope Jr. praises Cathy Truitt for stepping down from the runoff election, "thus saving the taxapayers of Wake County thousands of dollars."

Pope is wrong. The ballots have been printed. Early voting has already begun. Voters will still see Truitt's name on the ballot even though she conceded today.

Here's the GOP press release:

Truitt warns about new board as she concedes race

Cathy Truitt fired bullets at the new school board members, the Wake County Republican Party and the Wake Schools Community Alliance as she announced her decision to concede the District 2 race.

Truitt warned that the new board majority will move toward resegregated schools by cutting magnet programs and sending students to "pure neighborhood schools." She said the public needs to speak out now to get the board to back off from making the quick changes she said they're planning.

"I don't think people want the school system to be blown up," Truitt said at her press conference. "If people get involved now, they can have an impact."

New school board members meet with RWCA

The new school board members are reaching out to the black community to discuss the changes looming on the horizon in Wake.

New school board members Debra Goldman and Chris Malone and District 2 candidate John Tedesco met Thursday with school board member Keith Sutton and Raleigh-Wake Citizens Association President Danny Coleman.

Tedesco said new board member Deborah Prickett couldn't attend because of a scheduling conflict.

Charges fly in District 2 school board race

We've got the political pawn/resegregationist vs. the flip-flopper.

As noted in today's article, those are some of the uncharitable accusations being flung by the candidates in the District 2 school board runoff election. There's clearly no love lost between John Tedesco and Cathy Truitt, who is expected to announce today that she's dropping out of the race.

"Every day it's a different kind of sensational language," Tedesco said in the article of Truitt's charge that she will stop him from resegregating the schools.
