What to Watch on Thursday: A strong premiere night on NBC

Charlie's Angels (8pm, ABC) - A remake of the 1970s hit show starring Minka Kelly, Annie Ilonzeh, and Rachael Taylor. I'm not a fan. You're better served watching "Community." Or "Big Bang Theory." Or "The X-Factor." Or anything else.

Community (8pm, NBC) - In the Season 3 premiere, the study group wonder if Pierce will join them as they gather at the start of a new semester. Also, Jeff clashes with his biology teacher (Michael K. Williams, "The Wire," "Boardwalk Empire") and is kicked out of class, and Dean Pelton has a new nemesis at Greendale -- John Goodman.

Big Bang Theory (8pm, CBS) - Two new back-to-back episodes open the fifth season. First, Penny hits a low point when she realizes what she's done by sleeping with Raj, and Sheldon becomes leader of the paintball team. Later, Penny and Sheldon clash and Amy is caught in the middle.

Parks and Recreation (8:30pm, NBC) - Leslie is faced with the difficult decision when she decides to run for office in the Season 4 opener. Meanwhile, Ron prepares for the return of his first wife (Patricia Clarkson).

Person of Interest (9pm, CBS) - A new drama following a presumed-dead CIA agent (Jim Caviezel) and a billionaire software genius (Michael Emerson) who try to stop crimes before they happen. Adrienne likes it. Read more.

The Office (9pm, NBC) - In the Season 8 premiere, the staffers discover their names on a mysterious list authored by new Sabre CEO, played by James Spader (right). Paranoia sweeps through the office as everyone speculates about what the list means.

Grey's Anatomy (9pm, ABC) - Meredith is fired in tonight's two-hour Season 8 premiere. I have nothing against "Grey's," but there's better stuff on.

Whitney (9:30pm, NBC) - A new sitcom about about unmarried couple Whitney (Whitney Cummings) and Alex (Chris D'Elia). Is it funny? Adrienne says ...

Prime Suspect (10pm, NBC) - A new series about a NYC homicide detective (Maria Bello) coping with sexism and harassment from colleauges while working murder cases. Also stars Aidan Quinn. It's a remake of Helen Mirren's classic PBS series, but it's quite good. I think you should watch.

The Mentalist (10pm, CBS) - In the fourth season opener, Jane is in prison and must prove that the man he killed was Red John. Lisbon wants Van Pelt to get counseling for having to shoot her fiance when it was discovered he was Red John's inside man. So that Red John thing is over, right?

Season 4 of "Damages" debuts on DirecTV

Much as it did a few years ago with NBC's neglected jewel "Friday Night Lights," DirecTV rescued FX's superb drama "Damages" from the scrap heap last year, promising the show's fans two more seasons of Patty Hewes' mind-bending machinations.

The fourth season of that acclaimed Glenn Close series -- its first on DirecTV -- premieres tomorrow night at 10pm.

Season 4's legal plot involves a lawsuit against a powerful military security contractor, à la Blackwater, with John Goodman playing the Erik Prince role (in a fairly obvious nod, Goodman's character is named Howard Erickson). Chris Messina ("Julie and Julia") plays an Iraq war vet who took a job in Afghanistan with Erickson's High Star Security Corporation. He just happens to be an old high school friend of Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne), who is trying to bring about the lawsuit on behalf of families of those killed during questionable High Star missions.

What to Watch on Saturday: New movies from Hallmark, Lifetime

Best Food Ever (7pm, TLC) - A mini-marathon of episodes from a new TLC show narrated by John Goodman. Tonight, the cross-country culinary tour show will feature episodes called Sensational Sandwiches, Fab Food Carts, Buzzworthy BBQ,

Last Chance Highway (8pm, Animal Planet) - Two dogs scheduled to be put down in Memphis are rescued, and a pit bull is rescued and reunited with her sister in New York City.

Persons Unknown (8pm, NBC) - Joe endures a series of visions designed to return him to the program and shift his focus from Janet.

Lies Between Friends (9pm, Hallmark) - An art authenticator played by Gabrielle Anwar (Fiona from "Burn Notice," at right) helps a sheriff (Craig Sheffer) investigate the murder of her former roommate. The two women were prepared to settle an old dispute during a weekend trip with college friends, but the murder occurs before the reconciliation can take place.

Within (9pm, Lifetime) - A thriller in which a little girl (newcomer Mia Ford) with the ability to see evil in others comes to a new town with her father after witnessing her mother's murder. Children in the town are being attacked and the girl's gift could be instrumental in finding the perpetrator.

Tonight's "Treme" finale packs emotional wallop

I've thoroughly enjoyed this first season of "Treme" on HBO, but I have to admit it never fully grabbed me the way I wanted or expected, or the way some other dramas have right out of the gate.

That is, until I watched tonight's Season 1 finale.

For the 90-minute finale, airing at 10pm, David Simon's chronicling of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina comes together in such a beautiful way, that I found myself thinking about the episode for days after I'd watched it (a first for me this season). Tonight, some of the characters get closure, painful as it may be, some embark on hopeful new beginnings, and some are left facing a fresh new hell on earth.
