Three Points: N.C. State 78, Miami 73

A belated Three Points from the Miami win, thanks to a lost morning at the Miami airport.

1) Keeping your eye on the ball

After N.C. State's 78-73 win over Miami gave the Wolfpack a 4-1 ACC record, and share of first place, first-year Wolfpack coach Mark Gottfried stayed true to his talking points.

N.C. State has a "long way to go" has been Gottfried's refrain since he took the job in April and a 4-1 ACC start hasn't changed his mindset.

UNC coach Roy Williams concerned by Miami guards, shooters

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina coach Roy Williams on Sunday began watching film of Miami, which visits the Smith Center on Tuesday night. And the thing that stood out most to Williams? The Hurricanes’ guards.

Particularly, the starting backcourt duo of Durand Scott, a junior, and Malcolm Grant, a senior.

“I think that they set the tone for everything,” Williams said.

Tudor's Take: An ACC mulligan for Larranaga

As an assistant at Virginia in 1983, Jim Larranaga etched his name into ACC basketball infamy with a technical foul that may have sparked a national championship run — by N.C. State.

At age 61, the George Mason coach of the past 14 seasons is getting a chance to change his mark on the ACC. Miami saw to that Friday by hiring Larranaga to take over Frank Haith, who left recently for Missouri.
