UNC QB Renner to play baseball for Tar Heels

North Carolina freshman quarterback Bryn Renner will play baseball this spring for the Tar Heels, the UNC sports information office said.

Renner, a highly rated recruit who was redshirted this fall by the Tar Heels, will not miss any spring football practices, however, a UNC spokesman said.

Four other UNC freshman football players are scheduled to run track this spring: defensive backs Curtis Campbell and Josh Hunter, wide receiver Jheranie Boyd and running back Hunter Furr.

CHAPEL HILL -- North Carolina was waiting for its young receivers to emerge. Turns out all the Tar Heels needed was a visit from East Carolina.

No. 24 UNC beat ECU 31-17 on a breakout game from freshman receiver Erik Highsmith, who caught six passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.

Solving UNC's scholarship equation

Butch Davis promised it would work out.

With Angelo Hadley's exit from the UNC football program before he got there, the Tar Heels coach was right. His over-recruiting strategy balanced out in the end.

What was once a 17-scholarship discrepancy is likely to work out to an even 24 signees to 24 available scholarships.
