O'Brien watches, evaluates Wolfpack in first scrimmage

N.C. State coach Tom O’Brien saw positives and negatives in the Wolfpack’s first scrimmage of the spring Saturday – which is about what he expected.

O’Brien enjoyed watching quarterback Mike Glennon throw against the first-team secondary. In 75 plays, the offense scored two touchdowns, both on passes. The defense, which had 27 interceptions last season, picked off two passes in the scrimmage.

O’Brien said Glennon and the secondary are improving.

“(The secondary) is operating at a high level, which is good for them and our quarterback,” O’Brien said. “It’s all about making each other better.”

N.C. State's Kuhn out for Georgia Tech

Reserve defensive tackle Markus Kuhn is among the players N.C. State is listing as out for Saturday's noon game at Georgia Tech.

Kuhn has played 28 snaps and made three tackles over the last two games.

Mikel Overgaard, who started N.C. State's first two games at offensive tackle, is out for the second straight game with an elbow injury. And running back James Washington, who has yet to play this season but was listed as a second-teamer on the team's preseason organizational chart, is out again with an injured hamstring.

RB Washington heads Pack's injury list

James Washington, who began the preseason as the No. 2 running back, leads the N.C. State injury report, which was released this morning.

Washington has a hamstring injury and is out for Saturday's 6 p.m. game with Western Carolina. During the preseason, redshirt freshman Dean Haynes and freshman Mustafa Greene moved ahead of Washington and Curtis Underwood (who's now the No. 3 running back) on N.C. State's depth chart.

Here is N.C. State's complete injury list. The players with asterisks next to their names are out for the season:

Haynes' smarts elevate him at RB for Pack

Dean Haynes was so eager to learn N.C. State's running back playbook in a short time that he made flash cards to quiz himself on his assignments.

Even Haynes admits that he was surprised that he was named the starting running back for Saturday's 6 p.m. opener against Western Carolina. He moved from cornerback to running back midway through fall camp after coach Tom O'Brien was disappointed with the play of the backs in the team's third preseason scrimmage.

Heading into the preseason, junior Curtis Underwood was listed as the starter and sophomore James Washington was the backup. Now redshirt freshman Haynes is starting with freshman Mustafa Greene backing him up.

N.C. State RBs limited in practice

N.C. State running backs Curtis Underwood and James Washington did not practice in full pads Monday as they were wearing jerseys with a red cross on them signifying that they were injured.

Coach Tom O'Brien declined to comment on their status. His preseason policy is not to talk about injuries unless he knows they are going to cause players to miss the opening game.

"I don't have anything to say about any injuries one way or another," O'Brien said. "They're still good for the first game, and if they're not, I will tell you."
