In today's Chapel Hill News

Brrrh!

Here's a look at today's local headlines:

JAGUARS MAKE FINAL: With Douglas Parrish scoring two touchdowns and the Jaguars’ defense shutting down the Monarchs’ strong running game, Carrboro came away with a 21-14 victory to advance to the NCHSAA 2AA state championship game. The team, in just its sixth year, is 15-0. Read the story here.

FIVE NOW WANT COUNCIL SEAT: We reported last week how former member Sally Greene wants to finish outgoing Chapel Hill Town Council member Penny Rich's term. Today, staff writer Tammy Grubb reports there are four other contenders, with more possible until the council deadline. Find out who they are here.  And tell us, is it important for the now 6-2 male-female council to appoint a woman to the seat? (Send your comments to editor@newsobserver.com)

BROWN BACK AT IT. : He's the face of downtown, or at least down Chapel Hill's buildings. Hometown artist Michael Brown (left) is back on the ladder, which it where associate editor Dave Hart found him last week painting his latest mural. See it here.

You love your Harris Teeter, the University Mall store anyway. In today's letters, two readers respond to columnist Carol Henderson's recent remarks about the supermarket. The Carrboro aldermen have recommended three sites for the county's new southwest branch library.  Builder Chad Collins is thankful for his home.

And a whole lot more. All in today's Chapel Hill News, reaching 38,000 homes between Fearrington Village and Hillsborough.

Jaguar C-X16 hybrid concept breaks cover

Jaguar's C-X16 has a 375 hp supercharged 3.0-liter V6 boosted by a KERS system that can add 94 hp with its electric motor. It claims 0-60 mph runs in under 4.4 seconds and can reach 186 mph.

The two-seat concept will debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show this month. The hybrid's KERS is adapted from the Kinetic Energy Recovery System used in Formula 1 racing. A button on the steering wheel will release up to 94 more hp and an additional 173 lb-ft of torque from the electric motor.

Jaguar is looking to join in on the recent push from car makers to use hybrid technology for performance gain rather than purely efficiency for more miserly and environmental motorists.

Either way, hybrid technology is looking pretty hot-to-death. You'll want to check out the gallery.

East Bladen 56, Carrboro 48

CARRBORO – It was a rollercoaster ride for No. 3 seed Carrboro against No. 5 East Bladen that ended just short of a thrilling outcome.

East Bladen held off Carrboro for the wild 56-48 victory in the third round of the 2A NCHSAA playoffs.

Carrboro almost erased a 42-14 halftime deficit.

Athens Drive 35, Holly Springs 31

RALEIGH – Athens Drive trailed in the fourth quarter Friday, but rallied late to knock off Holly Springs 35-31 and end the regular on a positive note.

With the win, the Jaguars became eligible for a wild card berth in the playoffs.

Athens Drive 56, Apex 39

APEX – The state playoffs don't arrive for two weeks, but Athens Drive and Apex met in an elimination game of sorts as three-win teams trying to finish with five for the regular season to earn a possible at-large post-season berth.

Athens Drive took the step forward as Jaguars ended a five-game losing streak to improve to 4-6 with a 56-39 win over Apex Friday at the Cougars' field.

Cedar Ridge 20, Carrboro 14

CARRBORO — Just as many great rivalry games are, this one was decided in the closing seconds.

Johnathan Allison recovered a fumble after Carrboro’s Derek Bryant was sacked at the Cedar Ridge 7 with 10 seconds left, preserving the Red Wolves’ 20-14 win over their Orange county rivals Friday night at the Jaguars’ field.

Northwood 35, Carrboro 34 (2OT)

PITTSBORO – Northwood won in dramatic fashion Friday night, snapping Carolina Nine 2-A rival Carrboro's seven-game winning streak with the help of a 349 yard rushing performance by running back Kevin Williams.

In a homecoming night thriller, the Chargers pulled out the victory 35-34 in double overtime.

Cary 26, Athens Drive 20

RALEIGH – Cary sophomore running back Marquise Sherrod-Cooper ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns Friday night to help push the Imps past Athens Drive 26-20 on the road.

Carrboro 22, Chapel Hill 20

On Friday night, something had to give.

In Carrboro’s brief history, it had never started a football season 5-0. The visiting Chapel Hill Tigers had never lost to the Jaguars.

Behind Derek Bryant’s strong arm and a stronger running game, Carrboro took down their cross-town rivals for the first time, 22-20, in a game that went down to the wire.

Dang Thursday night games

Would have been nice to have seen the Indianapolis' Colts drama-filled victory over Jacksonville on Thursday night, but the NFL Network can't reach an agreement with the big cable companies. The Nielsen Company has released figures showing how many people have seen this year's Thursday night games on the network.
