Reminder: Free haircuts for kids start Nov. 4 at J.C. Penney

Reminder: The free haircuts at J.C. Penney start this Sunday.

A big heads up to parents: Starting Nov. 4, your kids can get free haircuts at J.C. Penney on Sundays.

It seems the free back-to-school cuts were such a huge success, the struggling retailer is making the free cuts a regular offer.

Will free haircuts drum up enough business to bring J.C. Penney out of its slump?

As a frugal-minded consumer, will you be tempted to make a few purchases while taking advantage of the free haircuts?

The free haircuts, by the way, are good for kids in kindergarten through sixth grade at J.C. Penney hair salons across the country.

J.C. Penney adds new private label for women

J.C. Penney has launched a career sportswear line called She Said, adding to the store's growing list of private and exclusive brands, according to this story by Reuters.

But unlike so many private labels these days that offer lower-priced options to shoppers, this one will be higher priced, hoping to capture shoppers looking for pieces that they consider "something special." Blouses will be priced at about $44 and jackets at $85.

J.C. Penney ditches the fur

Just in case you thought the fur was real at J.C. Penney, it's not. Well, at least, not anymore.

The president and chief executive officer of The Humane Society said today in a blog posting that J.C. Penney is the first "multiple location, traditional department store" to be fur-free in stores and on its Web site.

Apparently, it's a been a long road with fur and J.C. Penney. In 2006, the company was at the center of an Humane Society investigation, the CEO said. Some of the fur sold at the stores was labeled raccoon but it later turned out the fur was from raccoon dogs, a wild species that's supposed to be skinned alive in China.
