Aereo to offer Internet TV option in Triangle

Aereo, the Internet company that offers inexpensive live TV online, is expanding into the Raleigh-Durham market this spring.

For the past year, the $8-a-month service has been tested in New York City. The company announced Tuesday at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that it was expanding into 18 U.S. markets this year. The expansion has been expected since July when a federal judge ruled that the service is not a copyright violation - though the Associated Press reports that broadcast companies are challenging that ruling.

Aereo streams a feed of a television show as it's airing over the Internet to computers, iPhones, iPads, Roku and Apple TV. The technology lets viewers pause, rewind and fast forward through any program being watched, or save a program to watch later.

There's a sign-up at aereo.com to try the service for free when it comes to the Triangle this spring.
