Aretha's hat headed to the Smithsonian?

Move over, Michelle Obama's ball gown. It looks like the Smithsonian Institution wants Aretha Franklin's memorable crystal-studded, bow-shaped hat she wore to the Inauguration in its fashion collection as well.

According to a statement from Franklin, the museum has asked that Franklin donate the hat to join other items scheduled to be displayed, including the white Jason Wu gown that Michelle Obama wore to the Inaugural balls.

Franklin, it seems, isn't easily swayed by the request. "I am considering it," Franklin said. "It would be hard to part with my chapeau since it was such a crowning moment in history. I would like to smile every time I look back at it and remember what a great moment it was in American and African-American history. Ten cheers for President Obama."

The hat has become so popular, it even has its own Facebook page and more than 85,000 fans.

Want a dress like Michelle Obama's?

Jason Wu might have passed on selling replicas of Michelle Obama's white, one-shoulder Inaugural Ball gown. But there's at least one other place where you might get something similar and for far less than the price of a Jason Wu gown. Edressme.com has for sale a white, one-shoulder gown with similar floral embellishments as Michelle's dress for $320.

But be sure to read the fine print. The gown can be preordered for delivery in March.

Wu-hoo! Michelle Obama's designer is a big hit

Want to know what happens when the nation's new First Lady picks a virtually unknown fashion designer to create her Inaugural gown?

His Web site gets unprecedented hits. Like, millions of them.

Yep. Jason Wu's site, jasonwustudio.com received more than 4 million hits in the wake of Michelle Obama wearing his gown Tuesday night, according to Fashion Week Daily.

And you can hand it to Wu. He's got class (or at least a legal agreement). He doesn't plan to reproduce Obama's custom white gown, according to the article from FWD.

While Wu isn't sold locally, you can find him online at Bergdorf Goodman, among other stores.

Jill Biden's Reem Acra gown

Ok, all you Michelle Obama naysayers ... So if you didn't like Michelle's white one-shoulder gown, how did you feel about Jill Biden's red strapless dress?

I just loved it. I think the best part was that she picked a silhouette that showed off a little of what seems to be an awesome body. She's got a great shoulders and arms and she wasn't afraid to let the world see them (and she's 57!). The dress got a little sexy with the horseshoe shaped dip at her bust but then it was back to business with the high waist.

The other reason I liked it? I'm a serious sucker for a red gown, especially to an event like an inaugural ball. It just feels festive and celebratory.

By the way, Lebanese designer Reem Acra made the dress. Acra is known for her amazing gowns, including her stunning wedding dresses, that help women accentuate their best features.

Finally! Michelle Obama's gown ...

And what a vision she was in a one-shoulder, white, Grecian-style gown by Jason Wu at the Neighborhood Ball. The gown was peppered in what appeared to be fluffy floral appliques and beading.

I loved that she picked the modern one-shoulder look and didn't cover up as many of the previous First Ladies have at balls.

I also liked that she picked yet another relatively unknown fashion designer for her gown. What a shot in the arm for America's fashion industry! Wu is a 26-year-old rising star (especially after tonight!) who was born in Taiwan and studied at Parsons in New York.

And the new prez looks pretty dapper too in that white bow tie, doesn't he?

In fact, they almost look like newlyweds, yes?

Aretha Franklin's hat ... loved it or hated it?

Aretha was among those taking a fashion risk at today's Inauguration with her bow-shaped hat studded in Swarovski crystals.

Apparently, the hat cost $179 and was made by long-time hat maker Mr. Song Millinery in Detroit.

It was big and it was loud. And I liked it. But I think only Aretha could get away with wearing a hat like that. Most of us would be laughed out of Washington if we wore it.

Who was Jill Biden wearing?

Under that red coat, it turns out Jill Biden was wearing a belted gray houndstooth dress by Milly from the holiday collection (see pic to the right).

Cost? $360. Sensibly priced (considering it was for her husband's inauguration) and stylish. I understand why she wanted to wear knee-high boots with the dress, but I think the whole look could have looked more polished with a pair of classic pumps and dark tights.

It just tickles me, though, that she picked a dress by Milly. The designer brand, which is sold locally at stores such as Uniquities, Beanie + Cecil and Fleur, typical attracts a younger shopper but one who likes a feminine, contemporary style.

(Hoping to find a picture of Biden in the dress to post soon!)

The First Daughters are adorable

How cute is Sasha Obama in that orange scarf and bubblegum pink jacket? Such a bold color pairing and quite the fashion statement.

UPDATE: Apparently both Sasha and Malia Obama's coats (Malia in cobalt blue and Sasha in pink) were from J.Crew's Crewcuts children's line.

All hail the purple scarf

I just love that both Barbara and George Bush are wearing purple scarves! His scarf is more of a royal purple while hers is more of plum. Do you think they planned that?

Michelle Obama in Isabel Toledo

Did you see Michelle Obama on the way to prayer services this morning? She was wearing a lovely buttercup dress and matching coat (in brocade?), perhaps what she'll wear for the swearing-in ceremonies this morning?

Word has trickled out that Cuban-born designer Isabel Toledo, who most recently had a short stint as creative director of Anne Klein, has designed her outfit for the ceremonies. But it's unclear whether the outfit she wore for the prayer services is the same one she'll wear for the swearing in.

Obama has worn Toledo in the past. In June, she wore a black outfit by the designer to a New York City fashion world fundraiser.

And Toledo is one of the many rising-stars in the fashion world that Obama has worn in recent months, helping to elevate all of them, including Thakoon, Narciso Rodriguez and Maria Pinto, in the fashion world.

If you missed seeing Obama, hold on. Picture will be up soon.
