Bruins 3, Canes 2

RALEIGH —  The Carolina Hurricanes missed a golden opportunity to pay back the Boston Bruins at the RBC Center Tuesday.

The Bruins (26-13-7) made off with a 3-2 road win a day after thumping the Hurricanes 7-0 in Boston.

The Hurricanes failed to take advantage of several scoring chances in the second period and failed to capitalize on a 45-28 shots advantage over the Bruins.

Rangers 2, Canes 1 (OT)

NEW YORK — Carolina Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice called it a "man's game."

Canes captain Eric Staal said it had a playoff feel to it, certainly a playoff kind of edge.

The Hurricanes and New York Rangers went at it for more than 63 minutes Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, smacking each other around, forcing the action, forcing their goaltenders to make huge stops. Finally, the Rangers won it 2-1 in overtime and the winning goal may have come from one of the most unlikely of players.

Forward Mats Zuccarello, all of 5 feet 7, turned and blistered a sharp-angled forehand past the Canes' Cam Ward and into the top of the net at 3:09 of OT. For Zuccarello, make it his first NHL goal in his sixth NHL game, and what a way to get it.

Smith's 28 leads Duke over Miami

DURHAM -- On a night when there was a lot of attention paid to a various guards for different reasons, Duke senior Nolan Smith stood out above the rest.

Miami guards Durand Scott and Malcolm Grant are superb drivers and passers who brought slick skills to Cameron Indoor Stadium that are a credit to their New York City upbringing.

Duke freshman Kyrie Irving was the most highly regarded backcourt prospect in terms of NBA potential in the building, but he remains out with a toe injury. Although it was a shame Irving and Smith couldn’t duel with Scott and Grant, Smith carried the day in the Blue Devils’ 74-63 win.

Canes 3 Thrashers 2 (SO)

ATLANTA -- It took 30 games, but the Carolina Hurricanes finally got their first look Thursday at the Atlanta Thrashers.

Turns out, it was a long look.

The Hurricanes and Thrashers went 60 minutes, then an overtime, before finally settling it in a shootout. Carolina won it 3-2, getting shootout goals from Jussi Jokinen and Sergei Samsonov.

Canes 4, Panthers 3

SUNRISE, Fla. — The Carolina Hurricanes had a police escort, sirens blazing, Wednesday from their hotel in Fort Lauderdale Beach to the Florida Panthers' BankAtlantic Center.

Once at the arena, the Hurricanes were on their own. The Panthers made all the early noise, but the Canes were loud late. Very loud.

Trailing 3-0 barely five minutes into the game, the Hurricanes rallied behind rookie Jeff Skinner, veteran Tuomo Ruutu and backup goalie Justin Peters for pulsating 4-3 victory.

Stars 2, Canes 1 (SO)

DALLAS — After the Dallas Stars failed to capitalize on a half dozen scoring chances in overtime, center Brad Richards got the only penalty shot for a 2-1 shootout win at American Airlines Center Friday.

Carolina goalie Cam Ward was more than solid in the overtime period but the Hurricanes couldn't get much going until an odd-man rush gave Hurricanes defenseman Joe Corvo a good look.

But he fired into the glove of a diving Dallas goalie Andrew Raycroft, in for the injured Kari Lehtonen.

Richards was the only player successful in penalty shots.

Canes 2, Avalanche 1 (OT)

RALEIGH -- Brandon Sutter had the winning goal, Cam Ward had a winning game in net and rookie Jeff Skinner showed off his scoring skill again Friday with a winner of a move for the Hurricanes.

It all added up to a 2-1 overtime victory over the Colorado Avalanche at the RBC Center, ending the Canes' three-game slide at home.

Sutter ended what may have been his best all-around game of the season with the game-winner. Taking a pass from Joni Pitkanen, he chipped the puck past defenseman Mike Hunwick on the right wing and then beat Avs goalie Craig Anderson with a quick, high wrister.

Hurricanes 3, Bruins 0

BOSTON — Two days after the birth of his son, Carolina Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward gave Nolan a game to remember.

Ward made 37 saves for his 13th career shutout and the Canes scored three power-play goals in beating the Boston Bruins 3-0 at TD Garden.

"Cam was the difference," Canes coach Paul Maurice said. "He was our best player."

Flyers 3, Canes 2

PHILADELPHIA — It's all beginning to wear on the Carolina Hurricanes.

The travel. Road games. Good teams. Tough games.

For the Canes, playing the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday at Wells Fargo Center offered yet another good, tough test in a season that already has had several. On this night, the Flyers simply were too good and a little too tough, winning 3-2.
