Second round of girls soccer playoffs

The second round of the NCHSAA girls soccer playoffs takes place either Friday or Saturday. Here are all the match-ups from around the area and the rest of the state.

Fuquay, Holly Springs to play for title

After each team finished the regular season 15-1 in conference play, Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs' softball teams will need one more game to decide the Tri-Nine Conference championship.

Holly Springs to finish season on middle school field

Holly Springs softball coach Jill Minchik said that her team will likely finish out the rest of its regular-season home schedule at Holly Grove Middle School, adjacent to the high school (and seen in the background of this photo taken of the damaged field).

The Golden Hawks' outfield fence was broken and collapsed following the tornado that touched down near in area two weekends ago.

"It's taken a toll on the seniors because they want to have their senior night at home," junior pitcher Erica Nunn said.

Damage done to Holly Springs fields

In the foreground, a small limb still sits in the Holly Springs High School softball field's fence where it was lodged during Saturday's tornado. In the background, 90 percent of the outfield wall has collapsed and will need replacing.

One of Saturday's tornadoes hit the area near Highway 55 and Avent Ferry Road in Holly Springs, and that devastation was still apparent today. Parts of Avent Ferry Road are still blocked off and almost every house on either side of Highway 55 had a tarp on the roof and someone removing limbs out front.

That intersection is just 1.3 miles away from Holly Springs High School, which had some of its athletic fields affected by the tornado's fury.

Jordan, Holly Springs ranked in 4-A baseball

For the first time in two months, Impact Baseball has a new statewide ranking for North Carolina's 1-A, 2-A, 3-A and 4-A high school baseball teams.

Only three teams represent the greater Triangle area.

Nunn fans 15 Bengals

Erica Nunn struck out 15 batters in Holly Springs' 4-1 Tri-Nine 4-A softball victory over Fuquay-Varina on Wednesday. She allowed only four hits.

N&O high school girls basketball rankings

Green Hope and Millbrook remain Nos. 1 and 2 in the N&O high school girls basketball rankings. River Mill Academy, a 1-A charter school, pushes up to the third spot with Durham Hillside climbing to No. 4.

NCHSAA girls East second round basketball

Durham Hillside plays at Green Hope in a NCHSAA 4-A East girls basketball game on Wednesday night. The girls basketball playoffs enter the second round on Wednesday night.

Northern Durham stands out on sectional bracket

Northern Durham (21-3), the Piedmont Athletic 4-A regular-season champion, looks to be the team to beat in its NCHSAA 4-A girls basketball sectional.
