NC Basketball Coaches Association all-district teams for boys, 2013

The N.C. Basketball Coaches All-District teams were released following the state championships. Gary Clark and Isaiah Hicks were named the players of the year from their respective districts.

Denny Medlin of Clayton and Tod Morgan of Chapel Hill each won district coach of the year honors.

Area teams are listed below. Most of the N&O area high schools fall under Districts 5 and 6, but some are in District 8.

Isaiah Hicks named N.C. Gatorade boys basketball player of the year


Isaiah Hicks of state 3A champion J.F. Webb is the 2012-13 Gatorade North Carolina Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

The 6-foot-8, 210-pound senior power forward led the Warriors to a 27-5 record and the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A state championship. Hicks averaged 22.9 points, 12.9 rebounds, 5.6 blocks, 1.8 steals and 1.3 assists per game.

NCHSAA boys basketball playoffs, 2013


Clayton was the top-ranked boys' basketball team in the N&O area at the end of the regular season.

J.F. Webb was the area's only state champion in the NCHSAA playoffs. The Warriors claimed the 3A title, while Broughton was runner-up in 4A.

Dave Telep's 7th Carolina Challenge features 17 locals

Dave Telep's 7th annual Carolina Challenge, a showcase of the state's top boys' basketball talent, announced its first invitees on Friday.

The Challenge will be held at Ravenscroft on March 23, and so far it will include nine Triangle area players.

They are: Clayton's Gary Clark, Apex's T.J. Evans and Ian Boyd, Ravenscroft's Chris Corchiani Jr., Sanderson's Parker Fennema, North Raleigh Christian's Phillip Haynes, Broughton's Cameron Gottfried, Northern Durham's Ricky Council, Garner's Julius Barnes, Cardinal Gibbons' Austin Burnette, Panther Creek's Akeem Tate and Juan Munoz, Riverside's Justice Kithcart, Millbrook's Rob Brown, Middle Creek's Quentin Jackson, Chapel Hill's Brian Thornton and Durham Academy's Alston Thompson.

The full list is below. In the release, it says more players will be invited at a later date, depending in part on their postseason performances.

Cary Academy names new varsity basketball coaches

Cary Academy has filled both basketball head coaching vacancies.

The Chargers have hired Mindaugas Timinskas to be their varsity boys' basketball head coach, while Mike Zeillmann will be the varsity girls' basketball coach.
