"Magic Beyond Words": Rowling 101

If you know the story of J.K. Rowling, you know it's perfect fodder for a Lifetime movie. And while her life may not have played out exactly as portrayed in "Magic Beyond Words: The J.K. Rowling Story" (Lifetime, 8 tonight) -- it's an unauthorized biopic -- the movie is a perfectly pleasant, if basic overview of the famed author.

The movie opens with already successful Rowling (Poppy Montgomery), riding in a limo to a premiere with her fiance, then flashbacks to a very young Jo, playing a witch game with a friend in the forest.

From there the movie moves ahead quickly, focusing mostly on her deep love of writing from an early age, and her even deeper love of her mother, who gets multiple sclerosis and dies young. (Rowling has said she's estranged from her father, and in the film, her father's remarriage is touched upon as point of contention.)

A Special Birthday Edition of CRIZZLE'S CRITICAL CONDITION!!! (AKA The One Where A Friend and I Wonder Where Our Lives Went!)

As of last Wednesday, I am officially 33 years old. (Please hold the applause.) And man, do I feel old!

Yeah, some of you are saying, "Oh Craig, you're still young!" I just spoke at a college function with a bunch of teenage, mostly female, aspiring journalists — and all they could talk about was "Harry Potter" and "Twilight." Every time I name-checked some old movie, they looked at me like the RCA Victor dog. To all these Robert Pattinson-loving kids, I'm a geezer! I might as well have my own condo up in Boca! Thank you for being a friend, dang it!

For this edition of the Condition, I needed to talk to someone who understood my pain. Fortunately, another friend of mine just celebrated his 34th birthday on Saturday. His name is Jason Shawhan, a Nashville-based film critic for these publications, a blogger, an employee at this awesome movie theater and a man of many aliases. (He'll always be Jean Genet Ramsey to me.)

We basically talk about our current lives as aging, desperate film critics, bad movies we clean the house to and moviegoing birthday memories. We also talk a bit too much about Prince — most specifically, stuff involving bootlegs (one of us may get a call from Prince's lawyers soon), the whereabouts of Prince's female associates(especially that one who purified herself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka) and why he won't get a hip replacement. It's another one of those installments where movies kinda take a backseat to, well, everything else.

I hope you enjoy me kvetching for thirty minutes or so. As Jason says, "It's just a rich tapestry of sad." You can also download it here.

FRIDAY: The Man Who Viewed Too Much finally comes out of the shadows and makes an appearance on the Condition.

Another Episode of CRIZZLE'S CRITICAL CONDITION Where I Sound Drunk (But I Swear I'm Not! HONEST!!!)

I don't know whether it was because I was kinda out of it on this particular day, I was participating in this while lying down or I just have trouble using those things called words. But I sound more unintelligible (read: drunk) than usual on this installment of the Condition.

Or maybe it was because I was talking to someone who knows how to use words — and use them well. Today's guest is Chuck Tryon, Fayetteville State University professor, film & culture blogger and author of "Reinventing Cinema: Movies in the Age of Media Convergence."

We discuss that book, along with the so-called subversiveness of "Bruno," the significance of the "Harry Potter" movies and why film critics shouldn't beat themselves up about keeping audiences away from "Transformers 2."

Well, I should say he talks. I just ramble, stagger and make impersonations of those people on the N & O comments section who say I'm a terrible writer. They're wrong; I'm a terrible conversationalist — at least, on this podcast. You can also download it here.

MONDAY: Me and another film critic celebrate our birthdays the only way we know how — by trying to figure out where did Apollonia go.

What to Watch on Thursday: Two Harry Potter specials on the air

J.K. Rowling: A Year in the Life (8pm, ABC) - A report based on a 2007 British documentary focuses on Rowling's life in the year before the "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" book was published. Rowling visits her hometown and talks about how she came up with the major Potter characters.

Big Brother 11 (8pm, CBS) - The first houseguest is eliminated, but we're pretty sure Jordan is safe for now.

Burn Notice (9pm, USA) - Michael is targeted by operatives who kidnap him and take him into the wilderness along with a major player in the Miami underworld (Gloria Estefan?). Then, of course, stay tuned for Royal Pains at 10pm.

Discovering the Real World of Harry Potter (10pm, Travel) - A look at the locations, religious rituals and figures that helped inspire J.K. Rowling's Potter books.

Happy Harry Potter Day, Everyone!

Here's a little something to go with the review.

Growing up with Harry

In the early days of the Harry Potter craze, I entered my godson, Daniel, in a Harry Potter lookalike contest at Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh. His mother had to caution me later that in boasting of his victory, I should not say, "And he destroyed the competition! Wiped the floor with them!" This was unsportsmanlike, she said, and "they're 12."

I was one of those parents who staked out the store to be there at midnight so I could buy a copy fresh off the press, and we had to see the movie on the first day of release, which meant standing in long lines, not to mention that it took forever to get popcorn and Goobers, a flavor sensation when mixed that is delicious, and that we created at the first Harry Potter movie.

What a time. I gave Dan a tie at one point that was a duplicate of the one Harry wore in the movie. He described it as his first "big guy" tie. We got all the gizmos from the film, posters for the room wall, everything.

Dan's 20 now. The posters on the wall are of rock groups I've never heard of, and of Hawaiian Tropic models. There's been a driver's license and college and all that.

Yet today I left him a message on his cell phone (something else that came after Harry) suggesting that when the new movie comes out in a few days, we should go. I know what's happened to Dan over the last few years, how he's grown up. For some reason I think we should catch up with Harry.

Plus, the Goobers and popcorn. I'm not kidding about that. You owe it to yourselves.

Lost's Hugo likes Journey and pancakes in a can

You can't not love Hugo from Lost. (Below, check out how nicely he's playing dominoes with Miles in a recent episode not long after Miles called him Tubby.) I defy anyone to hate on Jorge Garcia after reading his blog and finding out he loves Journey. (Garcia attended Journey's concert, yes, they're touring without Steve Perry but with glorious sound-alike Arnel Pineda, in Hawaii.)

Harry's Quidditch at Cardinal Gibbons

Students play a version of the game from the Harry Potter stories.
