Walk-in flu clinics Jan. 9

Free H1N1 flu vaccinations are going to be available at three Durham schools Jan. 9.

Vaccinations are given on a walk-in basis, no appointments needed. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and clinics will be held at Hillside and Riverside high schools and Neal Middle School.

Children less than six months old are not allowed to take the vaccine.

Since September, the county health department has dispensed more than 14,000 doses of vaccine. The health department is still taking appointments for Tuesday and Thursday vaccinations at its office, 414 E. Main St. Call 560-7882.

Kids' second-round flu vaccinations Wednesday

Second-round H1N1 flu vaccinations for kids under 10 are going to be given Wednesday (Nov. 18), 3-7 p.m. at the National Guard Armory.

These vaccinations are only for youngsters who got their first-round treatment Oct. 19 or 21 at the Durham Public Schools Staff Development Center.

Durham County Public Health will also hold second-round vaccination clinics in December. That schedule has not been published.

Flu vaccinations available Wednesday

The clinic opens at 10 a.m. and carries on until the vaccine runs out.

Pregnant women, people between six months and 25 years old, people 25 to 64 years old with medical conditions and healthcare personnel are at high risk of the disease. A parent has to come with anyone under 18.

The armory is at 801 Stadium Drive, off North Duke Street across from County Stadium. Parking is available there, and a free shuttle service will be operating between the armory and the county health office at 414 E. Main St.

GrooveFest fashion show canceled

The fashion show that was set to take place Thursday as part of Cameron Village's GrooveFest has been canceled. Part of the reason for the cancellation, it turns out, has to do with the sorority sisters who were to be the models in the show. They are on some sort of H1N1 flu virus lock-down.

But there's still plenty of fashion fun happening this week at Cameron Village. The merchants and employees are supposed to be dressed up all week in their favorite fashion from the 1960s.

Feel like flu? 'Stay home,' says public-health boss

Public health Director Gayle Harris has two words for anyone feeling flu-ey.

"Stay home."

As of this morning, Durham County has had only one confirmed case of the so-called "swine flu" — now more scientifically called "Novel H1N1 flu" — but the stuff is out there along with various other manifestations of the cruds. And Harris said her department is getting lots of calls from doctors seeing "novel" symptoms like nausea and diarrhea along with the usual aches and fever.
