What to Watch on Thursday: "Deep End" like "Grey's" with lawyers

The Deep End (8pm, ABC) - Consider this new pilot a "Grey's Anatomy" with lawyers. "The Deep End" is about sexy first-year attorneys at a powerful law firm in Los Angeles who are guided by a reluctant mentor. It stars Billy Zane, Matt Long (Jack McCallister on "Jack & Bobby), and Mehcad Brooks (Eggs from "True Blood").

Grey's Anatomy (9pm, ABC) - Izzie returns, hoping to reconcile with Alex, and Derek confronts the chief about his drinking problem.

The Office (9pm, NBC) - A potential buyer shows up at Dunder-Miflin and Michael, Pam, Andy and Dwight join forces to impress him.

The Mentalist (10pm, CBS) - The gang investigates the murder of a mayor's aide. The mayor is played by Sharon Lawrence.

Burn Notice (10pm, USA) - Season three resumes with a "Cagney & Lacey" reunion. Michael asks his mom (Sharon Gless) to help out by getting information from a records clerk played by guest star Tyne Daly. But Madeline befriends the "asset," which causes big problems later on. Also in this episode, Michael's "cover" makes him a competitive driver from North Carolina, which naturally means he wears wife-beaters and dips snuff.

What to Watch on Thursday: Jack Black joins "Community," "Runway" returns to NYC

Community (8pm, NBC) - All new comedies tonight on NBC. On "Community," Jack Black tries to join the study group, and Jeff becomes editor of the Greendale Gazette Journal. Doesn't he know newspaper jobs only end in heartbreak? On "Parks & Recreation," Leslie (Amy Poehler) goes on a date with a doctor, played by her real life husband Will Arnett. Then there are two new episodes of "30 Rock." James Franco guest stars as himself in the first one, aggravated that Jenna is pretending to be in a relationship with him.

Grey's Anatomy/Private Practice (9pm, ABC) - It's another crossover night, and the action centers around Addison and Mark McSteamy Sloan, and Mark's pregnant daughter.

Project Runway (10pm, Lifetime) - "Project Runway" returns! And we mean it really returns this time, because it's finally back in New York where it belongs. Now we can try to forget the failed LA experiment that was last season.

Archer (10pm, FX) - You'll get two back-to-back half-hour episodes in the debut of this naughty new animated action series. It's created and produced by a UNC grad, and we think it's definitely worth checking out.

Today's DVD giveaway might need a checkup!

Woo Hoo Jeanine of Wake Forest! You are the winner of the "Life" DVD.

Two more to go!

Today, the complete second season of "Private Practice." Also starring is Taye Diggs, Tim Daly, Amy Brenneman and Audra McDonald.

The 6-disc, 22 episode set also has some nice bonus features: extended episodes, deleted scenes and bloopers and two featurettes. It's more than 940 minutes of warm TV-ing.

Just email me (adrienne.johnson@newsobserver.com) with the name of the court that starred Amy Brenneman in the subject line. In the body, give your name and contact information. Entries with the correct answer will be put in a random drawing to choose a winner.

We'll take emails until midnight. (Wednesday, Dec. 23) Check back tomorrow for the winner and a new chance to win.

What to Watch on Thursday: Significant character death on "The Mentalist"

Community (8pm, NBC) - YES. We're looking at a Señor Chang-heavy night on "Community," when Jeff befriends our favorite Asian Spanish teacher and then begins receiving special perks.

Bones (8pm, Fox) - Booth's grandfather (Ralph Waite) moves out of a nursing home and in with Booth, and immediately begins meddling in his personal life and with cases.

Parks & Recreation (8:30pm, NBC) - Leslie + Ron + hunting trip = hilarity. We hope.

Grey's Anatomy (9pm, ABC) - I know there are a lot of "Grey's" haters out there, but there were some juicy developments on last week's show. I'm very concerned about The Chief (right). That development  breaks my heart, but also explains a lot

The Mentalist (10pm, CBS) - I can't for the life of me remember where I read this, but word on the street is that at least one significant character from the show will be killed tonight at the hands of Patrick Jane's nemesis, Red John. The CBS synopsis says the team investigates a death "in the office."

What to Watch on Thursday: Kim Raver joins "Grey's Anatomy"

Vampire Diaries (8pm, CW) - Damon tells Stefan the real reason why he returned to Mystic Falls. Stefan is stunned, so I'm assuming it has something to do with Virginia tourism.

Community (8pm, NBC) - I'm still singing last week's awesome "Gettin' Rid of Britta" in my head and hoping for another classic moment tonight. Sounds promising: Abed's films seem to predict the future, and Pierce (Chevy Chase) tries to help Britta quit smoking.

The Office (9pm, NBC) - Another episode about office rumors???

Grey's Anatomy (9pm, ABC) - Kim Raver ("24" "Lipstick Jungle") joins Seattle Grace as an Iraq war veteran who also happens to be a cardiothoracic surgeon. Also, Izzie returns with her high school mentor (Joel Grey), who is seeking treatment for dementia.

Project Runway (10pm, Lifetime) - Tonight is part one of a two-part season finale. The final three designers prepare for a Bryant Park Runway Show under the watchful eye of mentor Tim Gunn

What to Watch on Thursday: Real Heifers of Atlanta finale

Community (8pm, NBC) - Jeff has an ulterior motive for urging Troy to join the school's football team, but Annie interferes. Whatever. Just please give me some more Señor Chang (right).

The Office (9pm, NBC) - Jim and Pam return from their honeymoon only to learn that Michael is now dating Pam's mom. As you might expect, Pam isn't exactly thrilled about the news.

The Jeff Dunham Show (9pm, Comedy Central) - A new show from the comic puppeteer Jeff Dunham. The review in "The Hollywood Reporter" says it best: "You'll be the dummy if you tune in." It's up to you, but you've been warned.

Grey's Anatomy (9pm, ABC) - A burn victim dies unexpectedly in the ER and the chief has to find out which resident is responsible.

Real Housewives of Atlanta (10pm, Bravo) - "Is your wig squeezing your brain too tight, heifer?" "I'm supposed to forget that you choked me?" No, no, that's not a scene from "Masterpiece Theatre." That, my friends, is the season finale of "Real Housewives of Atlanta" calling.

What to Watch on Thursday: "30 Rock" returns to NBC lineup

Grey's Anatomy (9pm, ABC) - It's Day One of the Seattle Grace-Mercy West merger, and it's war. With jobs on the line, no one here is playing nice. Plus, Hector Elizondo returns as Callie's father, and he's brought with him a priest who will pray for Callie to start dating men again.

30 Rock (9:30pm, NBC) - It's the much-anticipated return of NBC's award-winning (but modestly-rated) sitcom. Liz (Tina Fey) and Pete search for new talent and Kenneth goes on strike. Jack (Alec Baldwin) is struggling to both cut costs and boost ratings of NBC's show-within-a-show (doing more with less, anyone?), which gives Tracy (Tracy Morgan) the idea of reaching out to the public. That's just not going to end well.

Real Housewives of Atlanta (10pm, Bravo) - I can't make any snarky comments about this episode because in light of AJ's recent death, it sounds just plain sad: Kim and Sheree come together to plan Kandi and AJ's wedding shower, while Kandi and AJ (and Kandi's mom) all visit a marriage counselor to try to work out some of their differences.

What to Watch on Thursday: FlashForward debuts and Grey's returns

FlashForward (8pm, ABC) - This is ABC's big new drama premiere, and it stars Joseph Fiennes (left, from "Shakespeare in Love") as an FBI agent trying to get to the bottom of a weird phenomenon in which a worldwide blackout allowed people to see into their futures. Everyone sees one precise point in time: 10pm on April 29, 2010. Apart from that being my birthday, what is significant about that date? And what do the visions mean? ABC is counting on this one.

Grey's Anatomy (9pm, ABC)
- "FlashForward" is followed by the two-hour premiere of "Grey's." Unless you've been living under a rock, you already know the answer to the cliffhangers about what happened to George and Izzie, but I won't spoil it for you rock-dwellers. Let's just say the doctors are searching tonight for ways to deal with their grief.

CSI (9pm, CBS) - It looks like this could be an entirely different show this season. Not only did show star William Petersen leave "CSI" before last season, the show also just lost Jorja Fox and Gary Dourdan. But Laurence Fishburne is still on board, and he's searching for a new serial killer, Dr. Jekyll.

The Mentalist (10pm, CBS) - Fresh off an Emmy nomination, Simon Baker resumes his role as faux-psychic and police consultant Patrick Jane. This season, a new agent (Terry Kinney from "Oz") shows up to snatch away the Red John case, which is Jane's passion. The battle between Jane and Agent Bosco will play out over the course of the season.

These shows aren't season premieres, but don't forget NBC's night of comedy (which ends at 10pm, wink wink) and new episodes of "Bones" and "Fringe" on Fox, as well as "Survivor" at 8pm on CBS and "Vampire Diaries" at 8 on the CW. Also, new episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" on FX at 10, and over on Bravo's "Real Housewives of Atlanta," Kim's mysterious sugar daddy Big Papa returns!

It's Independents' Day at CRIZZLE'S CRITICAL CONDITION!!?!!

Q: Where have all the good indie films gone?

A: Germany.

That's one of many things we learn in this edition of the Condition, where I talk to guest Andrew Grant, one of my fave film bloggers and co-owner of indie DVD company Benten Films, about the current state of independent cinema. We also get into this whole mumblecore business (I can take anything featuring these two, but other from that — whateva!), and where the future of decent independent cinema lies. (See above.) You can also download it here.

Grey's recap: Will 'Izzie haters' get their wish?

I haven't liked this "Ghost of Denny" storyline any more than anyone else. The only saving grace is that it is Denny. So while I haven't enjoyed the ridiculousness of Izzie making out with a figment of her imagination, I do appreciate some Denny screen time.

But last night, for better or worse, we all gave up the ghost. Denny and Izzie ended the light and flirty ghost banter, and fought all night about why he won't leave her alone. Can you feel sorry for a ghost? I can. . . .
