Once again, Greg Paulus has proven he should never be underestimated.
On Monday night, coach Doug Marrone named Paulus the starting quarterback at Syracuse. Paulus, who took a four-year hiatus from football while playing point guard for Duke, beat out sophomore Ryan Nassib, senior Cam Dantley and freshman Charley Loeb to earn the position.
Greg Paulus is going home to play college football.
The former Duke point guard will attempt to play quarterback for Syracuse University this fall, he announced on Thursday.
But the Orange, which hasn't had a winning season since 2001, has a designated starting quarterback and a senior backup who started 11 games in 2008.
First, Greg Paulus. Now, Jimmy Graham. Who's next, Cheick Diakite?
Graham will try in follow in the footsteps of Jeremy Shockey and Kellen Winslow. The Miami basketball player will play tight end this fall for the Hurricanes.
Greg Paulus is visiting Syracuse today and not to see his parents. Paulus is checking in with the Orange to see if he can play football there in the fall.
ESPN reported there was a "95 percent" chance Paulus would land at Syracuse but it's not a done deal. Nebraska, and other major Division I programs, are also in the mix for the services of Paulus, an All-American quarterback in high school who hasn't played football in four years.
Greg Paulus will go home to play college football, according to ESPN.
Paulus, who tore up the New York State prep record books as a quarterback at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, will suit for the Orange in the fall.
Paulus will need a waiver from the NCAA to transfer from Duke, but if Taylor Bennett can go from Georgia Tech to Louisiana Tech without a one-year wait, so can the former point guard.
DURHAM — Greg Paulus doesn't know what he's going to do next.
Since his basketball career ended three weeks ago, the Duke senior has worked out for the Green Bay Packers and been offered a football scholarship from the University of Michigan.
"I've got to do my homework," Paulus said Thursday. "These are really exciting opportunities, something you dream about having the chance to do."
Finding a new team would only be the first hurdle for Greg Paulus to play Division I football this fall.
The Duke senior would need to be granted a waiver by the NCAA to be eligible to play at Michigan, or any other Division I program besides Duke, according to the compliance offices at Duke and the ACC.
Paulus, who played basketball for Duke the past four seasons, visited Michigan on Tuesday. To play football for the quarterback-starved Wolverines, Paulus would essentially need the NCAA's permission.
Duke football coach David Cutcliffe said Wednesday that he had serious discussions with former point guard Greg Paulus about the possibility of joining the Blue Devils football team next season.
Cutcliffe told Paulus that if his goal was to play quarterback, he didn't have much of a shot at Duke. The Blue Devils have a fourth-year returning starter in Thaddeus Lewis.
Just another offseason Wednesday:
• Duke's ex-point guard could possibly, maybe play football for Michigan in the fall. (Fox Sports)
• Duke/State/UNC/Memphis/Kentucky's would-be future point guard could possibly, maybe play basketball in the NBA in the fall. (Preps Now)
Greg Paulus hasn't played a down of college football but the Duke basketball player worked out for the Green Bay Packers on campus last week.
Duke spokesman Matt Plizga confirmed the report by ProFootballTalk.com that Paulus, an All-American quarterback in high school, worked out for a Packers scout on Thursday. Paulus threw passes to Duke's All-ACC receiver Eron Riley, who's considered a late-round draft prospect. They were the only two players at the workout, according to Duke.
