A message from DOT to drivers on rural Green Level Church Road near Apex: Prepare to stop.  The intersection at Jenks Road will be converted Wednesday to a four-way stop.

Drivers on Jenks stop now.  DOT will install stop signs and stop-ahead signs for drivers on Green Level Church Road.

The only explanation given is that an investigation found that the 4-way conversion was warranted by "traffic volumes and other factors."

Some commuters in western Wake County will face the choice of driving a free, four-mile detour during construction of a new bridge on Green Level Church Road -- or paying a toll for a shorter detour that will open about the same time.

The state Department of Transportation says it has awarded a $2.5 million contract to S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson to replace the 60-year-old Green Level Church Road bridge over White Oak Creek at the Cary-Apex town limits.

Western Wake reduces confusing mix of Green Level WHATEVER road names

You might think, when you drive through farms and subdivisions west of Cary and Apex, that all roads lead to Green Level -- because there are at least three roads with some variation of "Green Level" in their names.

Roads in this part of western Wake change their names frequently, but only slightly. Now, with the support of Cary officials, the Wake County commissioners have taken a step to reduce the confusion.

Effective March 1, Green Level to Durham Road (State Road 1625) will lose its identity to become part of Green Level Church Road. And a section of Alston Avenue (State Road 1630) also will take the same name. ... [MORE]
