Wake's new SAT results

You can take a glass is half full or half empty look at the new SAT results for Wake.

The school district's average SAT score rose two points to 1,059 (based on the math and reading portions). Only a handful of much smaller districts in the state had a higher score, such as 1,179 in Chapel Hill-Carrboro.

But the percentage of Wake high school seniors who took the exam this past school year dropped to 74 percent. It was at 80 percent the previous year.

Wakefield survives turnovers to beat Green Hope

Wakefield survived seven turnovers Friday night to defeat Green Hope 34-13 in a non-conference game.

The Wolverines had five turnovers in the first half, which ended in a 7-7 tie.

"We just executed better in the second half," said Wakefield coach J.D. Dinwiddie. "In the first half, we played a lot like we practice last Wednesday, but in the second half we played a little better. Maybe we had the jitters.

O'Connell wins U.S. Amateur Sectional qualifier

Cary’s Kevin O’Connell won the U.S. Amateur Sectional qualifier in Midlothian, Va., earlier today, carding a 36-hole score of 11-under 133 to win by five strokes.

O’Connell, a 2007 Green Hope High grad and rising sophomore at North Carolina, shot a course-record eight-under 64 on Monday at Salisbury Country Club. He followed that up with a three-under 69 today.

The win clinches O’Connell’s place in the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 4 Aug. 18-24.

The win is just the latest in a string of honors for O’Connell, who was the 2007 NCHSAA 4-A individual state champion and a part of two state title teams at Green Hope.

After his freshman season in Chapel Hill, he was named the ACC Freshman of the Year, he was named to the All-Freshman team by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation, and he was on the PING All-America third-team.

Last month, he won all three of his matches at the Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship at Tokyo Golf Club and was named the tournament’s MVP.

I’ve got calls into O’Connell’s people. Stay tuned for details.

Marshburn wins Carolinas Junior

Cary’s Michael Marshburn won the 59th annual CGA Carolinas Junior Championship in a playoff today in Okatie, S.C.

Marshburn, a rising senior at Green Hope High, entered the final round two strokes off the lead. He finished with a 54-hole total of two-over-par 212 at Chechessee Creek Club, firing rounds of 72-69-71.

Mark Joye, of Columbia, S.C., shot a final-round, three-under 67 to climb from a 13th-place tie after 36 holes into a share of the lead with Marshburn after 54. On the first playoff hole, both players missed the par 5, 10th hole’s green. Joye blasted out of the greenside bunker to about 4 feet.  Marshburn then chipped to about 1 foot and tapped in for birdie. Joye missed his birdie putt, giving Marshburn his first CGA title.

Both Marshburn and Joye will be invited to represent the Carolinas in the Carolinas-Virginias Junior Team Matches on August 9-10 at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis. Marshburn will join former Green Hope teammate Ben Kohles, who recently won the CGA Carolinas Amateur, on that team.

Andy Knox and John Conners — teammates on the Apex High golf team — were right on Marshburn’s heels. Knox was the mark of consistency, shooting 71-71-71 to finish at three-over 213 and in third place. Connors shot 70-71-73 to finish at four-over 214 and tied for fourth.

Kohles wins Carolinas Amateur

Cary's Ben Kohles beat Mt. Airy's Kyle Wilson 3 and 2 Sunday to win the 94th CGA Carolinas Amateur championship at Wilmington's Cape Fear Country Club.

Kohles, who graduated from Green Hope High last month, evened the match at the turn after Wilson led early 2-up. Kohles won the 10th, 12th and 14th holes before closing out the match when he and Wilson halved the 16th.

In the morning semifinals, Kohles defeated Scott Harvey of Greensboro 4 and 3.

Due to inclement weather earlier in the week, the championship match was shortened from 36 holes to 18 to accomadate a Sunday finish.

Kohles, who will play at the University of Virginia next year, had a strong tournament from start to finish. He shot a five-under 67 in the first round of stroke play and was in second place. He shot one-over 73 in the second round and finished tied for sixth to earn a spot in match play. In the round of 32, he beat Charlotte's John Ebert 2 and 1. In the round of 16, he beat Green Hope teammate Michael Marshburn 4 and 2. In the quarterfinals, he eliminated Josh Gallman, of Gaffney, S.C., 2 and 1.
