THE NEW FALL SEASON: "A Gifted Man"

Patrick Wilson is "A Gifted Man" (8 tonight, CBS), a wealthy, brilliant and controlled neurosurgeon who runs into his ex-wife (Winston-Salem native Jennifer Ehle) one day. Funny thing is, she's been dead for two weeks.

This is either going to be "Ghost Whisperer" & "Touched by An Angel" with a little more smarts or a really interesting exploration of faith and science and the rational mind.  Fingers crossed that it's the latter; Jonathan Demme directs the pilot and "Erin Brockovich" screenwriter Susannah Grant wrote and created the show, which I'll take as a good sign.

There are some lazy stereotypes (Julie Benz as the doctor's sister is a mess, so, of course, she's the one to introduce him to the hippy shaman who helps explain the spirit world), but Ehle has an ethereal quality that's almost heart-breaking, and Wilson has really good moments as a man having his way of life challenged.

What to Watch on Friday: "Ghost Whisperer" ends for good, plus other finales

Ghost Whisperer (8pm, CBS) - This is the fifth season finale that suddenly this week became the series finale. To close things out, Melinda confronts a poltergeist in a hospital, which initiates the big, final (and we do mean final) showdown with the dark forces that have terrorized her and her son.

Friday Night Lights (8pm, NBC) - In the season's third episode, Eric and Tami have an argument over finances, and East Dillon's two stars, Luke and Vince, clash. Also, Riggins pitches in to help Coach Taylor with the team. (Last week's recap).

Medium (9pm, CBS) - CBS execs said this week it was a close call between canceling "Ghost Whisperer" and "Medium" (we're personally glad it was "Medium" left standing), and this 6th season finale certainly sounds like it would have been a heck of an ender for fans. Tonight, Allison's brain tumor reappears, upending her world and creating life-shattering repurcussions for her family and friends.

Keep reading for more finales airing tonight...

What to Watch on Friday: Spike Lee traces his family tree

Who Do You Think You Are (8pm, NBC) - In the season finale (NBC renewed the show for next season), Spike Lee traces his roots to Georgia and Texas, and makes a surprising discovery about his great-great-grandfather.

Ghost Whisperer (8pm, CBS) - A ghost tells Melinda that a nanny is evil, but you can't just take a ghost's word for something like that, so Melinda investigates for herself.

The Ricky Gervais Show (9pm, HBO) - Topics tonight include physical altercations, human anatomy, school curricula, and whistling and happiness.

20/20 (10pm, ABC) - A report on mothers with drinking problems features author Mary Karr, who wrote about her alcoholism in "Lit: A Memoir."

How to watch CBS dramas preempted by ACC tourney

If you want to watch any of the CBS dramas preempted by ACC Tournament games Thursday night and tonight, let's hope you have plenty of DVR space (especially if you're recording in HD).

"CSI," "The Mentalist," "Ghost Whisper," "Medium," and "Numb3rs" will all air Saturday night after midnight. WRAL recommends you set your DVR or TIVO to record from 11:30pm Saturday to 6am on Sunday.

There's a good chance tonight's "Numb3rs" season finale could also be a series finale. The show isn't doing great in key demographics and show star Rob Morrow has joined ABC's new legal pilot “The Whole Truth." CBS says no definite decision has been made yet.

What to Watch on Friday: "Smallville" seeks absolute justice

Smallville (8pm, The CW) - In a special two-hour episode called "Absolute Justice," the Justice Society of America has to save the world from a murderous former member, Icicle. Check out Doctor Fate and Star Girl!

Ghost Whisperer (8pm, CBS) - Criminally underused on "Drop Dead Diva," Margaret Cho guest stars on "Ghost Whisperer" as an occult professor who is being stalked by a secret admirer ghost.

Shark Tank (9pm, ABC) - I. Love. This. Show. Tonight: liquid llama fertilzer, message balls, a bendable geometry toy, and a hands-free umbrella. I would fund all that crap.

Caprica (9pm, Syfy) - Amanda's public admission about Zoe's role in the bombing ignites a backlash against the Graystones and creates tension for Lacy at school. Meanwhile, Zoe plots her next move.

Today's DVD giveaway will haunt you!

Sun from Cary, you're the lucky winner of the "Jonas: Rockin' the House" and "17 Again" DVDs!

Wasn't that easy?

Now we're going to the place where love never dies. That's the theme of "Ghost Whisperer: The Fourth Season."

It's a six-disc set of the hit CBS drama starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, nearly 17 hours of TV watching, 23 episodes. You also get a nice serving of special features including "The Other Side III Webseries," "Grave Mistakes," an interactive game," an interactive fashion style guide, and a behind-the-scenes look at Jamie Kennedy, who joined the show during this season.

Just to remind you, season 4 is the season where death turns Melinda and Jim's lives upside down.

Just email me (adrienne.johnson@newsobserver.com) with the name of the legal drama in which co-star Camryn Manheim gained fame in the subject line. In the body, give your name and contact information. Entries with the correct answer will be put in a random drawing to choose a winner.

We'll take emails until midnight. (Tuesday, Dec. 15). Check back tomorrow for the winner and a new chance to win.

What to Watch on Friday: Ugly Betty, Monk, and Chris Brown combo

Ghost Whisperer (8pm, CBS) - Melinda helps the ghost of a boy who says he was murdered by a police officer.

Ugly Betty (9pm, ABC) - Shakira and Christie Brinkley guest start as Mode goes on a location shoot to the Bahamas, where the Betty-Matt-Amanda love triangle explodes.

Monk (9pm, USA) - In the finale to the show's eight amazing seasons, Monk and Stottlemeyer close in on Trudy's killer. The larger issue may be Monk's fate. Will he survive last week's ricin attack?

White Collar (10pm, USA) - In the mid-season finale, Neal becomes a suspect in a clever jewelry heist, and Peter must decide if he's innocent, or pulling another con.

20/20 (10pm, ABC) - Chris Brown talks to Robin Roberts about Rihanna's recent ABC interviews.

What to Watch on Friday: Mr. Monk gets his badge

Law & Order (8pm, NBC) - An elderly man is forced to defend his store from an armed robber, but Lupo and Bernard suspect an ulterior motive.

Ghost Whisperer (8pm, CBS) - Melinda worries about Aiden when he's befriended by the ghost of a little girl who died with leukemia.

Monk (9pm, USA) - Monk is finally reinstated to the San Francisco police force, and his first case, tracking down a serial killer, is more challenging than he anticipated. We see the return of Trudy tonight (Brooke Adams) and the show has promised us resolution on her murder, so expect developments on that. After this, only two episodes left.

20/20 (10pm, ABC) - Another day, another Sarah Palin interview.

What to Watch on Friday: Zombies attack on "Medium"

Ghost Whisperer (8pm, CBS) - On the night before Halloween, there is no ghostier place to be than CBS. First up, the headless horseman from Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" comes to life and haunts Melinda. She later fears for Aiden when the book shows up at his school. (Relax Melinda, it's called a "library.")

Medium (9pm, CBS) - The cast is inserted into clips of the 1968 horror classic "Night of the Living Dead," which plays out in Allison's dreams. The dream sequences give her clues that help solve the murder of a funeral home director. Aida Turturro guest stars.

Numb3rs (10pm, CBS) - CBS keeps the spooky going with "Numb3rs," in which paranormal activity is suspected after a dead body shows up at a decommissioned air base.

Monk (9pm, USA) - Almost equally scary, Mr. Monk takes in a dog while he searches for its owner who has vanished. Don't forget "White Collar" at 10pm after "Monk."

What to Watch on Friday: L&O and a 'ghost block' part of busy debut night

Law & Order (8pm, NBC) - "Law & Order" enters its 20th season, as well as a new night and earlier timeslot. Tonight, a law professor is scrutinized when a war veteran is found dead in a university parking garage. Later this season, our beloved L-T, Liet. Anita Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson, left) will battle cancer.

Brothers (8pm, Fox) - A brand new show starring former NFL defensive end Michael Strahan as a broke football player who moves back home with this brother, played by Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, his mom, CCH Pounder, and his dad, Carl Weathers. Great cast!

Smallville (8pm, CW) - "Smallville" starts season nine on a different night. Tonight, Jor-El tells Clark to end things with Lois, but the heart wants what it wants. Brian Austin Green joins the cast as a new reporter working with Lois.

Ghost Whisperer (8pm, CBS)
- Melinda delivers a tiny little ghost whisperer of her very own in tonight's premiere, which is also directed by Jennifer Love Hewitt. The show then takes a "Desperate Houswives" style leap five years into the future.

Medium (9pm, CBS) - The second half of CBS's Friday Ghost Block features NBC's castoff thriller starring Patricia Arquette. The show's producers say there will be no changes to the show, even though it's skipping to a new network. Tonight's premiere picks up four months after last season's finale, and Allison is out of her coma. But will her powers be the same?

Dollhouse (9pm, Fox) - Season two and Echo's first mission is to marry a British businessman linked to a former FBI agent's open case.

Numb3rs (10pm, CBS) - In tonight's premiere, we'll find out if Amita accepted Charlie's marriage proposal. In other business, the team is protecting a political activist who may be the target of a sniper.

Real Time with Bill Maher (10pm, HBO) - This isn't a season premiere, but one of Bill's guests tonight is former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Don't expect Maher to castigate Spitzer for the cheating, but still, it should be interesting.
