Free kids' fishing event set for Saturday at Lake Wheeler

Lake Wheeler will host one of the 36 free kids' fishing events that
will feature prizes, including two lifetime fishing licenses on
Saturday, June 6.

The Lake Wheeler Fishing Derby, for children
ages 6-12, will be held from 9 a.m. till noon at the lake. Participants
can register onsite before the event. Lunch will be provided

Local hurdlers Dutch, Nunley off to NCAA Division I Championships

Former Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference track standouts Johnny Dutch of Clayton and Booker Nunley of Garner, both now running for South Carolina, are headed to the NCAA Division 1-A Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Both qualified for the June 11-14 national championships to be held in Fayetteville, Ark.

Dutch, a sophomore, won the 400-meter hurdle crown at the Eastern Regional in Greensboro on Saturday. He clocked in at 48.70, the best time at any of the regionals held last weekend.
Dutch also ran on the Gamecocks' third place 4x400 relay team, which also qualified.

Nunley, a freshman, finished third in the 110-meter hurdles at 13.63. Dutch was seventh in the 110 at 14.27 seconds.

Dutch also picked up two gold medals at the Southeastern Conference outdoor champpionships last month. He won the 400 hurdles and ran in the Gamecocks' 4x400 relay team.

Nunley finished second to teammate Jason Richardson in the 110 hurdles at the SECs. His time of 13.49 seconds established a new freshman record at South Carolina.

Garner, South Johnston out of state softball playoffs

Wednesday night saw the ends of Garner and South Johnston's runs in the NCHSAA softball playoffs. Triton downed South 2-1 in the 3-A playoffs, while Garner fell to Fuquay-Varina 8-3 in 10 innings.

We'll wrap up both teams' seasons in next week's print editions of the Garner-Clayton Record and The Herald of Johnston County.

Garner, South Johnston softball games postponed

Rain got the better of today's scheduled softball playoff games involving Garner and South Johnston. Garner will now host Fuquay-Varina at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, while South Johnston heads to Triton on Wednesday at 7.

Fuquay-Varina tops Garner

Fuquay-Varina scored five runs in the 10th inning to defeat Garner 8-3 in the third round of the state 4-A softball playoffs on Wednesday.

Fuquay (19-4) will be at home against Apex in the fourth round. Garner finished 24-4. 

Tuesday's softball playoff games all begin at 7 p.m.
