Southeast Raleigh gets the most first-place votes, but Garner wins the points totals in the preseason poll of the league coaches.
It looks like Wake is changing the way it handles JROTC programs.
As noted in today's North Raleigh News article, Millbrook High plans to start an Army JROTC program in spring 2010 and Garner High has expressed interest in getting one. Other high schools may have to go through extra hurdles in the future.
During an update on JROTC in the district last month, administrators told school board members they'll begin looking at getting programs on a system level than on a school by school basis.
Garner High football coach Nelson Smith recorded his first golf hole in one last Thursday.
Smith used a six-iron to ace the 158-yard No. 3 at Reedy Creek Golf Course in Four Oaks.
Our correspondent Josh Harrell, who has done nothing but great work for us ever since I've arrived here at The Cary News, will be leaving us this summer for grad school at Watkins Film School in Nashville, Tenn.
But as it turns out, Josh's branching out into another media platform could benefit us in the short-term.
Because while Josh is perfecting his craft, sometimes he'll hook us up with video highlights of the games he covers — like this video where Garner's Hunter Brown hits the eventual game-winning home run in the top of the eighth to lead the Trojans past Fuquay-Varina 4-2.
It adds a new dimension to the area sports coverage we try to do here at The Cary News/Southwest Wake News.
Honestly, I don't know how the guy does it. I can barely talk on the cell phone and write down stats at the same time, much less do all the necessary things AND film. But anyways, hope you all enjoy (unless you're from Fuquay, then I'll understand).
It looks like Wake was trying to steer more people into eight magnet schools this year via the second-chance letters.
For those who might not recall, this year was the first time that people whose magnet applications were rejected were sent a letter giving them a second chance to apply to another school.
You only got the offer if staff thought your departure wouldn't have a negative impact on your base school.
We've got new principals tonight at Garner High, Ligon Middle, Fuquay-Varina Elementary and West Lake Elementary.
Drew Cook was promoted from assistant principal to principal of Garner High. He replaces Mike Holton, who cited medical reasons for his departure.
Cook, who has worked as a teacher and AP at Garner High since 1997, will receive $97,167 a year,

Here's one a lot of you guys have been waiting for. Scott Lyons will become principal of Leesville Road High School in North Raleigh, replacing Stephen Gainey, who became assistant superintendent for human resources.
Lyons has been principal of Ligon Middle School since 2005. He used to be a teacher and assistant principal at Enloe High.

Some current magnet students might want to check the mail to see if they're being sent to a different magnet school next year.
Wake is revising the magnet draw areas for the International Baccalaureate elementary, middle and high schools, Academically Gifted middle schools, Gifted & Talented middle schools and Creative Arts elementary schools.
Letters are supposed to go out today to current magnet students whose schools have shifted. Everyone else will eventually be able to see their magnet options online.
