That's it. It's a bleak time. I can't even bring myself to recommend any of tonight's late night talk shows...

Unfortunately, "4th and Forever" misses the goal

High school has lots of drama, and a good sports story has as much, plus more. Put them together and you should have gold, right? Like "Friday Night Lights" but real.

"4th and Forever" (Current TV, 9 tonight) focuses on Long Beach Polytechnic High, a school named the sports school of the century by Sports Illustrated and that sent more players to the NFL than any other high school. (Its alums include Snoop Dogg, Cameron Diaz, Billie Jean King and Tony Gwynn.)

But in 2009, the football team's record was 6-6, so the reality show hangs its drama on redemption.

It's not a horrible starting point; the problem is that "4th and Forever" hits us with that angle like we're tackle dummies. That's just not necessary. We get that there's pride and legacy at stake.

What to Watch on Friday: Galifianakis on 'Real Time with Bill Maher'

Supernatural (8pm, CW) - Two back-to-back episodes close out the sixth season tonight. In the finale, the memory-blocking wall inside of Sam's head that keeps his darkest memories from him comes crashing down and he struggles to deal with the consequences.

Flashpoint (8pm, CBS) - Mike fears his former mentor may be implicated in a case that involves corruption, drug dealers and an attempted gang execution.

Real Time with Bill Maher (10pm, HBO) - Amy Chua and Zach Galifianakis are the interview guests tonight. Last time Galifianakis was on the show, he made headlines when he lit up and smoked a joint to illustrate his point about the legalization of marijuana. He also discussed his uncle Nick Galifianakis' failed senate run against Jesse Helms. I'm sure he's on tonight to promote 'Hangover 2,' but with him, you never know what else might come up. Other guests include author Reza Aslan, commentator Dylan Ratigan, and journalist Gillian Tett.

20/20 (10pm, ABC) - A report on infomercials and the "as seen on TV" products they promote. Includes interviews with celebrity product spokespersons and infomercial entrepreneur A.J. Khubani.

Meanwhile, Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) returns to Smallville to confront Kent.

Shark Tank (8pm, ABC) - This is the Season 2 finale??? How many shows are in a season, five? Way too short, ABC. Exhibit A: Tonight someone pitches a toilet-training kit for cats. We need more of this in our lives.

Friday Night Lights (8pm, NBC) - Coach Taylor gives recruitment advice to Vince, four East Dillon students make a pact, and Julie's relationship with a TA gets more complicated.

CSI: NY (9pm, CBS) - Season 7 ends with Mac determined to close his last remaining unsolved case. His newfound focus is triggered by a harrowing near-death experience.
