Some Triangle McDonald's to start taking back Shrek glasses today

Several of the Triangle's largest McDonald's franchisees will start accepting "Shrek" glasses today, after the fast-food chain recalled 12 million of the collectibles.

The 16-ounce glasses, which were a promotion tied to the latest Shrek movie, contain traces of the toxic metal cadmium.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the voluntary recall early today, warned consumers to immediately stop using the glasses; McDonald's said it would post instructions on its website next week regarding refunds.

But Fred Huebner, who owns 14 restaurants in and around Johnston County and southern Wake County, said that his locations will start taking them back today.

Ric Richards, who owns seven stores in Raleigh, Cary and Durham, said his managers know to start taking back the glasses today and refund their money.
