So you don't want to cook Thanksgiving dinner...

Foster's Market  to the rescue. You can order a complete Thanksgiving feasts from appetizers to desserts or you can order dinner for 4 for $99.

With the latter, you get oven roasted turkey breast, cornbread, celery and sage stuffing, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, Foster’s housemade herb gravy, cranberry orange relish, Peter’s favorite rolls, and a pumpkin pie.

The catch is you have to place your order by Monday, Nov. 22, to be picked up Wednesday, Nov. 24. This service is available at both Chapel Hill and Durham stores.

Sara Foster is teaching cooking classes

Sara Foster, owner of Foster's Markets in Chapel Hill and Durham, is teaching a few cooking classes at the Chapel Hill market:

  • 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, Holiday sides and selecting wines for Thanksgiving. Demo, no charge.
  • 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, Stocking up on Soup, Cost $40 for dinner and class.

Thursday's menu includes blood orange shrimp skewers, mango duck with coriander, heirloom tomato napoleons with fresh basil and mozzarella and napa cabbage, jicama and baby greens sald with a fresh fig vinaigrette. The cost varies because you pay for your plate by the pound. Wine costs $4 a glass, and domestic beers cost $2.

The Durham location is at 2694 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd.

Heirloom tomato celebrations

Several Triangle restaurants are celebrating heirloom tomato season with special dinners. Here are three that might interest you:

At 7 p.m. Thursday, July 8, Foster's Market in Chapel Hill is offering one of its farm dinners, which happen every other Thursday at that location. The family-style meal will feature heirloom tomatoes from Peregrine Farm in Alamance County. It costs $15 for adults, $7 for children. (Owner Sara Foster encourages parents to bring their children and noted that accomodations will be made for children who don't like the tomato-centric menu.) The menu includes a tomato plate with three different heirloom varieties, shrimp and pasta al fresca with focaccia and melon ambrosia. Walk-ins are welcome. Reservations are encouraged: 967-3663. The store is located at 750 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Raleigh's Zely & Ritz restaurant has made a tradition of heirloom tomato dinners. Last year, demand was so high that they ended up hosting seven such events. So far, they three dates chosen: July 20 and 28 and Aug. 3. Call 828-0018 for details and reservations.

Raleigh's 18 Seaboard is hosting heirloom tomato wine dinners at 7 p.m. July 26 and 27. It costs $45 per person plus tax and tip. The menu includes a sampling of heirloom tomatoes and cheese, bibb salad with green zebra tomatoes and sprite melons, grilled filet mignon with tomato terrine, corn, potatoes and a warm heirloom tomato gazpacho and an upside-down sungold tomato and pineapple cake with honey-basil ice cream. Family-style dinner TONIGHT at Foster's Market

Chapel Hill's Foster's Market at 7 p.m. tonight for a family-style dinner featuring produce and pasture-raised meat from Brinkley Farms in Creedmoor. 

It costs $25 for adults and $10 for children.

Here is the menu:

  • Relish tray
  • Cool cucumber gazpacho
  • Mixed grilled pasture-raised pork and brats
  • Wax and green beans marinated in mustard seeds and lemon peel
  • Warm grilled corn and summer squash
  • Sweet biscuits with blackberries and peaches topped with softly whipped cream

Doughman race and banquet set for May 29

I can't believe it's Doughman time already. It seems like Man v. Food star Alan Richman was just here and the man to beat in the annual eating-running-biking-swimming event.

It's too late to sign up to race. But you can still get tickets to the Saturday night banquet. Some local restaurants providing food for the banquet include Toast, Piedmont and Foster's Market. Not only will there be food and drink, but music, dancing and a raffle.Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 29 at the Durham Athletic Park.

Tickets cost $20 and remember the proceeds benefit the Durham Inner-City Gardeners program and SeeSaw Studio, two Durham charities.

Free coffee and cookies at Foster's Market

This is a reminder that Foster’s Market is celebrating its 20th anniversary today and tomorrow by giving away coffee and cookies to customers.

Tomorrow, bring your own mug to either the Durham or Chapel Hill stores and receive free coffee. On Friday, they will give a free cookie to anyone wearing a Foster’s t-shirt or hat. Their e-mail to customers says “the older, the better.”

Also tonight, the Durham location is doing their On the Porch grill out from 5-8 p.m. The specials include herb peach basted game bens, rosemary and fig thick-cut pork chops, roasted garlic and champagne green beans and an apple pecan mixed green salad. Plus they have glasses of wine for $3 and draft beers for $2.
