Amato finished at FSU after bowl

amatoblogPhil Coale - AP

Former N.C. State head coach Chuck Amato will be out of a job at Florida State after the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Florida State running backs coach Dexter Carter told the Sentinel that coach Jimbo Fisher has informed Carter and three other assistants that they will not be retained after the bowl.

ACC basketball lacking at top

A look at The Associated Press' men's basketball Top 25 in Tuesday's newspaper demonstrates that the ACC has a lot of work to do to gain national respect this season.

Just three ACC teams - No. 8 Duke (7-1), No. 11 North Carolina (7-2) and No. 24 Georgia Tech (6-1) - are in the Top 25 one week after the ACC lost 6-5 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, the Big Ten's first win in the 11 years of the event.

Favorable bowl matchups for ACC

On paper, Boston College against USC looks like the only sure loss of the ACC's seven bowl games. The ACC should win no less than four of its other six matchups, if not all of them.

But 90 percent of bowl winners are determined by which team wants to be there. Clemson and UNC would qualify as the conspicuous ACC teams that are not ecstatic with their bowl fate.

ACC in the NBA

2008 list

The ACC's the best way to get the NBA.

The conference's 54 former players in the NBA are the most among the six major college basketball conferences with Duke (14) leading the list.

Bowl outlook: Chick-fil-A will wait; SEC order set

The Chick-fil-A will wait to make its selection until after the ACC championship game, bowl president Gary Stokan said Thursday.

Virginia Tech's widely speculated to be the ACC representative for the New Year's Eve game in Atlanta but Stokan said he's not going to make a final decision until after Clemson and Georgia Tech meet on Saturday night.

ACC needs to stop the bleeding tonight

There’s a lot riding on the five ACC-Big Ten Challenge games to be held tonight in men’s basketball.

Simply put, the ACC needs momentum in what’s been a difficult year for the conference, to put it mildly. North Carolina, which provided the ACC with its shining moment in the spring, came through Tuesday night with a marquee, 89-82 defeat of Michigan State that helped even the ACC-Big Ten Challenge at 3-3 heading into tonight’s games.

Bowl outlook: Gator wants FSU, Bowden finale

If Rick Catlett has his way, Bobby Bowden's final game at Florida State will be in the Gator Bowl against West Virginia.

Catlett, the president of the Gator Bowl, said Tuesday that his bowl has the right to invite Bowden, who announced his retirement on Tuesday, and the Seminoles despite their 4-4 ACC record.

Bowden announces retirement

Florida State legend Bobby Bowden announced his retirement Tuesday afternoon. After 34 seasons with the Seminoles, including national championships in 1993 and 1999, the 80-year-old coach will step aside.

FSU finished in the AP top 5 for 14 straight seasons from 1987 to 2000 but has taken a step back this decade, finishing 6-6 this season and 29-22 since 2005, the year of his 12th and final ACC title.

UNC's 'D' headlines All-ACC team

UNC placed four players on the first-team All-ACC defense while Duke and N.C. State placed one player each on the first-team offense.

Defensive end Richard Quinn, linebacker Quan Sturdivant, cornerback Kendric Burney and safety Deunta Williams made first-team for the Tar Heels, which led the ACC in total and scoring defense.

Bowl outlook: ACC order clearing up

The outcome of the Georgia Tech-Clemson ACC title game will affect the first four bowl tie-ins for the ACC but not likely the last three.

North Carolina (Music City), Florida State (Meineke) and Boston College (Emerald) are tracking towards the last three tie-ins.
