Meet food writer Colman Andrews

The Fearrington House is offering the next in its series of Culinary Arts & Letters dinners  with special guest Colman Andrews.

Andrews, one of the founding editors of Saveur magazine, has won six James Beard awards for his cookbooks and food writing. He is now editorial director for The Daily Meal, a food and drink website and online forum.

The theme of the March 4 meal is "Four Courses from Four Books from Colman Andrews." Chef Colin Bedford will be cooking dishes from some of Andrews' books: "Saveur Cooks Authentic American," "Saveur Cooks Authentic Italian," "Catalan Cuisine" and "The Country Cooking of Ireland."

The March 4 dinner costs $125 per person. Andrews' cookbooks also will be available at a 25 percent discount  Call 542-2121 for a reservation.

The Fearrington House is located in Fearrington Village, a residential and commercial development off Highway 15-501 between Pittsboro and Chapel Hill.

 

Tickets are going fast for next Triangle Foodie Tweetup

It's an oyster roast/fried chicken feast from 6-8 p.m. April 6 at The Roost in Fearrington.

Fullsteam beer dinner at Fearrington House

Fearrington House is hosting a Fullsteam Brewery beer dinner at 6 p.m. Feb. 20. The dinner costs $125 $85 per person. (Thanks, Sean for the clarification.)

The rest of the 2011 special dinners at Fearrington have also been announced:

  • March 20, a dinner featuring wines chosen by Thomas Meunier with Authentique Vin Imports. The wines will be from Burgundy, Bordeaux and the Loire Valley regions of France.
  • April 10, Elk Cove Vineyards wine dinner with winemaker Adam Campbell.
  • Sept. 28, Blackbird Vineyards wine dinner with vineyard owner Paul Leary.
  • Nov. 13, Perception Winery wine dinner with winery founder Mark Ray.

Fearrington House has announced its special dinners for the entire year. Seats at these events sell fast so you might want to reserve now. Fearrington House's wine director Maximilian Kast is the series host and menus are planned by executive chef Colin Bedford. Here is the line up:

  • Jan. 16, a dinner featuring Sparkman Cellars wine and guest chef Charlie Deal of Chapel Hill's Jujube and Durham's Dos Perros.
  • Feb. 20, Fullsteam Brewery beer dinner with brewery owner Sean Wilson.
  • March 20, a dinner featuring wines chosen by Thomas Meunier with Authentique Vin Imports. The wines will be from Burgundy, Bordeaux and the Loire Valley regions of France.
  • April 10, Elk Cove Vineyards wine dinner with winemaker Adam Campbell.

Reminder: Southern Foodways Alliance book event & oyster roast

REMINDER: Here's your chance to shuck oysters and drink beer with Southern food writer John T. Edge, who runs the Southern Foodways Alliance at the University of Mississippi.

The group has a new cookbook, "The Southern Foodways Alliance Community Cookbook." McIntyre's Books at Fearrington is hosting Edge and local contributors chef Bill Smith and cooking instructor Sheri Castle for a book event 5-7 p.m. Dec. 3.

The Southern Foodways Alliance is a nonprofit dedicted to preserving and celebrating Southern food traditions.

REMINDER: Fearrington Village is celebrating 30 years later this month with a "Behind the Scenes Experience."

Guests can check in either this Friday or Saturday for a one-night Inn package that includes a personal tour of the kitchen with chef Colin Bedford, discussion of the wine program from wine director Maximillian Kast, tour of the formal gardens with master gardener Wendy Moses and discussions with organic farmer Anne Stomp in the kitchen gardens. Of course, food is included with a traditional English tea, a gourmet breakfast and a four-course dinner complete with wine pairings. The cost starts at $575 per couple.

Also, the inn is offering special summer rates until Sept. 30th. For $375 per couple, you can enjoy a luxurious night at the inn, a three-course dinner at the Fearrington  House Restaurant, a traditional English tea and a gourmet breakfast.

Food event roundup: wine & beer dinners and more

I'm back after the three-day holiday weekend and I've got a bunch of events to mention:

  • Elaine's on Franklin in Chapel Hill is offering a special Peregrine Farm dinner menu Wednesday, Sept. 8 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. The cost is $45 for five pepper-inspired courses including chili relleno with local goat cheese, black beans, cotija, cilantro and salsa verde and for dessert, lemon-verbena and jalapeno sorbet. For reservations, call 960-2770.
  • Sherri Brooks Vinton, author of "Put 'Em Up!," will be at Flyleaf Books in Chapel HIll tonight at 7 p.m. and teaching a class at A Southern Season at 6 p.m. Wednesday. If you wanted to learn more about canning and preserving, this is your opportunity. If you want to sign up for the class, call 929-7133. The class costs $35.
  • Herons at the Umstead Hotel in Cary reopens today after an extensive kitchen renovation. They will start serving lunch and breakfast today, and dinner Thursday.
  • Dos Perros hosts the occasional movie night in its private room. At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, they are showing "Like Water for Chocolate," and chef Charlie Deal will be serving up five courses.The meal costs $30. Call 956-2750 for a reservation.
  • If you don't want to watch the movie, Dos Perros is hosting a five-course beer dinner at 7 p.m. Wednesday featuring brews from Stone Brewery. It costs $45. Call 956-2750 for a reservation.
  • The Old Granary at Fearrington is hosting a three course beer dinner at 7 p.m. Thursday featuring beers from Carolina Brewing. The cost is $45. Call 542-2121 for a reservation.

Fearrington House chef to cook at 3Cups

Colin Bedford, executive chef at The Fearrington House, will be cooking this Thursday night at 3Cups. There are still 11 spots available for the event.

It costs $25 per person for three courses and dessert. The courses include:

  • goat cheese panna cotta with elderflower jelly, crab salad, beet and vanilla chutney.
  • house-smoked mahi with fennel salad, jasmine raisins, red onion jam, raspberry and chive creme fraiche.
  • bacon-wrapped shortrib with tomato salad, blue cheese mayo and crispy shallots.
  • for dessert, lemon possett with earl grey tea and rosemary shortbread.

Triangle Foodie Tweetup is TOMORROW

Last chance to get your tickets for the Triangle Foodie Tweetup tomorrow night at Fearrington's new beer garden, The Roost.

It's a cash bar and appetizers made by the capable chefs at Fearrington House. Tickets cost about $6 (a reasonable fee to make sure folks show up than to cover food costs.) 

The event is being co-hosted by Johanna Kramer, aka @durhamfoodie, myself, the folks @FearringtonNC, the Independent's food editor Amber Nimocks (@ambernim), Edible Piedmont's publisher Fred Thompson (@fredthompsonNC) and N&O Sunday Dinner columnist and cookbook author Debbie Moose (@DebbieMoose).
