Hillsborough Harvest Dinner this Saturday

The Eno River Farmers Market is hosting a harvest dinner at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11

The cost is $40 for an elegant sit-down, farm-to-fork dinner featuring meat, vegetables, fruit and cheese from Fickle Creek Farm, Rogers Cattle Company, Geodesic Gardens, Two Chicks Farm, Timberwood Organics, Hillsborough Cheese Company and Queen of Tartes. North Carolina wine also will be served.

The dinner will be held at the market house in downtown Hillsborough.

Tickets are available at Saturday's market and must be purchased in advance.

TomatoFest at Eno River Farmer's Market Saturday

You know it's tomato season when the farmers markets start their celebrations devoted to the summer fruit. From 8 a.m.-Noon Saturday, the Eno River Farmers' Market in downtown Hillsborough is hosting its TomatoFest. The fest features 57 varieties of tomatoes, various tastings, recipes, cooking, canning and storage tips.

Deadline nears to enter Slaws, Salads and Sides recipe contest

The deadline nears for The Eno River Farmers Market's Slaws, Salads and Sides recipe contest on June 19, the same day as Hillsborough Hog Days.

You have until Saturday, June 12 to enter. 

So if you think you make the BEST slaw, salad or side, you should bring at least four quarts of a homemade cold vegetable side dish to downtown Hillsborough's Public Market House between 8-10 a.m. June 19.

The cost to enter is $6 but contestants receive $4 in Eno River Farmers Market coupons with their entry.

The public can enjoy all the entries by paying $4 for four samples, or pay more to taste more. Folks will choose the People's Choice Award and a panel of judges will select first and second place winners, as well as a "Best Use of Local Ingredients" winner.

"Enchantment under the Soil" at Eno River Farmers Market

The Eno River Farmers Market in downtown Hillsborough is focusing on soil life from 8 a.m.-Noon Saturday, June 12.

Come to the market to buy food for your family and learn about composting, gardening and beneficial bugs. Some activities include:

  • At 10 a.m. Muriel Williams will lead a composting workshop and show how to set up an easy composting system at home.  At 10:30 a.m., she will lead a kids' composting session so put them in their play clothes for this dirt-filled experience.
  • Suzanne Tilton, aka The Butterfly Lady, will be on hand teaching about butterflies, caterpillars, cocoons and butterfly gardening. At 11:30 a.m., she will do a butterfly release. 
  • There also will be bug-crazed cupcakes for sale, bug-related crafts for kids and cooking demonstrations of root vegetables.   

REMINDER: Online orders at Eno Rivers Farmers Market

REMINDER: The Eno River Farmers Market in downtown Hillsborough is now taking online orders for their mid-week market on Wednesdays from 4-7 p.m.

Here's how it works:  Customers should go to order.enoriverfarmersmarket.com to create an account and place an order. Orders must be placed Saturday through Monday, and can be picked up and paid for by cash or check at the Wednesday market located in the Public Market House on East Margaret Lane. 

Unlike a CSA share, you can order anything you want in the amount you want. There also are no minimum orders. Ordering opens TODAY

The first Wednesday market is June 2.
