Wake County school board members raise concerns about student assignment plan's impact on magnet schools
Submitted by KeungHui on 01/25/2012 - 07:00How worried should the Wake County school system be about how the new student assignment plan is impacting the magnet schools?
As noted in today's article, the Democratic board members expressed concern Tuesday about the sharp decline in magnet applications. They also raised concerns that not enough academically identified students got accepted into Carnage and Ligon middle schools, which operate the AG Basics magnet theme.
“It seems to me that demand for magnets has gone down by half,” said new Democratic school board member Christine Kushner in remarks to staff members. “I’m concerned about that decline. I hope it’s something you are paying attention to.”

“I’m not going to wait,” said Massey, who has been an assistant principal at Wake Forest-Rolesville Middle School for the last two years. “The important thing is to assess our players now.”
Massey’s contract as an administrator will end on June 30. Massey said defensive backs coach Julian Lee will be leading and supervising the Eagles during their weight training program from now until July.
After being introduced to his new team Tuesday, Massey told his players he will implement his offensive and defensive philosophy soon.

Tata said they'll also present info on the feasibility of making changes such as raising student achievement over proximity in the selection process and setting aside 15 percent of the seats at the high-performing regional choice schools for applicants from low-performing areas.
