What to Watch on Tuesday: 'Smash' is back and J-Hud is on board

Pioneers of Television (8pm, UNC-TV) - The season 3 finale focuses on miniseries, including "Roots," "Rich Man, Poor Man" and "The Thorn Birds." LeVar Burton, John Amos, Ben Vereen, Leslie Uggams, Peter Strauss and Richard Chamberlain are some of those interviewed.

Betty White's Annual 90th Birthday Special (8pm, NBC) - Betty White celebrates her 91st birthday with Blake Shelton, Bill Cosby, Lily Tomlin, Bill Clinton and many others.

Smash (9pm, NBC) - In the two-hour Season 2 premiere, "Bombsell" runs into financial trouble that threatens the production, and Karen is mentored by a Broadway star and discovers a new artist in an unexpected place. Jennifer Hudson (at right with fellow "American Idol" alum Katharine McPhee joins the cast.

Emily Owens, M.D. (9pm, CW) - In the final episode of this series, Emily's decision to start a relationship with Micah becomes even more complicated when Wiill hears about it and feels jealous.

The Mindy Project (9:30pm, Fox) - Mindy sets up Jaime's female best friend with Danny for a double date on Valentine's Day.

Justified (10pm, FX) - Raylan encounters unexpected danger while searching for Drew Thompson.

Vegas (10pm, CBS) - Jack is faced with breaking some dire news to Mia, while at the same time he's compelled to hide vital information from her and his brother.

Edge of America (11pm, Travel) - In a new timeslot, host Geoff Edgers embarks on a rugged outdoor adventure in Maine. Included: sword fighting on the high seas like a pirate, racing a super-fast lobster boat and testing lumberjack skills.

What to Watch on Tuesday: 'Rizzoli & Isles' begins last stretch of third season

NCIS (8pm, CBS) - A teen girl is kidnapped when a Navy caption, his daughter and her friend are attacked. Meanwhile, Tony gets jealous when Ziva makes plans with a mysterious man.

Ben and Kate (8:30pm, Fox) - Kate has a hard time taking her boyfriend Will seriously after she sees the face he makes while playing guitar in his cover band. Meanwhile, Tommy hooks Ben up with a job at the country club, and BJ goes to a support group and gains insight about her friendship with Kate.

Rizzoli & Isles (9pm, TNT) - Jane and the team snoop when a man dies from poisoning at a cafe in a case that brings Stanley's true feelings to the fore. Later, Tommy and Lydia clash over custody of their baby. Tonight's episode is the first in a five-episode run that will close out Season 3.

Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars (9pm, ABC) - A winner is announced in the two-hour season finale.

Emily Owens, M.D. (9pm, CW) - Emily treats and infant and a deeply religious man whose faith is shaken following surgery.

New Girl (9pm, Fox) - Jess and Cece begin to worry about their biological clocks when they learn that a friend is pregnant. Meanwhile, Nick and Winston look for inspiration at the zoo for Nick's zombie-themed novel.

Parenthood (10pm, NBC) - Julia adjusts to staying home while Joel pursues a career. Also, Crosby clashes with a neighbor who could threaten the Luncheonette, parenting issues come between Sarah and Mark, and Amber helps Ryan with his career.

Raising Hope (8pm, Fox) - Burt scouts out a gay bar when Jimmy is invited to meet Sabrina's friend and his partner, but Virginia wonders why her husband has started spending so much time there, so she decides to find out for herself on Halloween.

Ellen DeGeneres: The Mark Twain Prize (8pm, UNC-TV) - Ellen DeGeneres is honored with the 15th Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Among those paying tribute, Kristin Chenoweth, Steve Harvey, Sean Hayes, Jimmy Kimmel and Lily Tomlin.

Ben and Kate (8:30pm, Fox) - BJ helps Kate find a costume to wear to an attractive neighbor's Halloween party. Meanwhile, Ben and Tommy stay home and hand out candy in hopes of meeting women, but the evening takes a wild turn when Tommy accidentally eats some of BJ's "special" candy from Amsterdam.

Happy Endings (9pm, ABC) - Dave and Alex's inability to commit to a new apartment proves to be quite a challenge for their real estate agent, while Jane pulls out all the stops when she takes Penny car shopping.

Emily Owens, M.D. (9pm, CW) - Emily talks about safe sex to some girls at a local high school, and tries to forget about her feelings for Will.

Frontline: Big Sky, Big Money (10pm, UNC-TV) - How the Supreme Court's decision in the Citizens United case, which prohibited restrictions on the amounts of money that outside groups may spend to promote or oppose political candidates and causes, is affecting the senatorial race in Montana. The special also shows how the Obama and Romney campaigns use data analytics to increase voter turnout and shape the election.

The New Normal (10:30pm, NBC) - Bryan basks in the Halloween spirit by decorating the house, going to a pumpkin patch to spot celebrities and ruling over everyone's costumes. David finally rebels when Bryan insists on having a Honey Boo Boo theme.

What to Watch on Tuesday: 'Happy Endings' and 'Don't Trust the B' return tonight

Cuban Missile Crisis: Three Men Go to War (8pm, UNC-TV) - A documentary recalling the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, when the U.S. and USSR squared off over secret Soviet missile bases in Cuba. The report details the actions of President John F. Kennedy, Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev and Cuba's Fidel Castro during the 13-day stalemate.

Ben and Kate (8:30pm, Fox) - Kate wants Ben to be more prepared for emergencies, but he argues that he can't plan for everything. Meanwhile, Ben's ex-girlfriend visits and BJ falls for her boss.

Happy Endings (9pm, ABC) - In the Season 3 premiere, the rocky relationship between Alex and Dave is on-again, while an accident puts Penny in a full body cast and turns Max into her angel of Mercy -- until he gets an eyeful of her hunky physical therapist. Later, Brad tries to keep a secret from Jane.

Emily Owens, M.D. (9pm, CW) - Emily learns that the nurses don't like her when she is assigned a difficult case as revenge. Later, Emily considers using a secret she knows about the chief to get speedy approval on a procedure.

Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23 (9:30pm, ABC) - The second season begins with James Van Der Beek trying to organize a "Dawson's Creek" reunion, but he makes some shocking discoveries and encounters some stars from TV's past, including Busy Philipps, Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Frankie Muniz.

The New Normal (9:30pm, NBC) - David and Bryan conclude their baby needs godparents. Elsewhere, Bryan tries to connect with his Catholic roots by visiting church, where he receives unexpected advice.

Parenthood (10pm, NBC) - Kristina prepares for surgery and finds that Max has a class speech scheduled for the same day. Also, Drew isn't pleased that he and Sarah are moving in with Mark, and Ryan asks Amber out.

Vegas (10pm, CBS) - The investigation into the murder of a black maid reveals a connection to a prominent local businessman, while Savino's interest in investing in another casino piques the interest of the Milwaukee mob.

Every once in awhile, a show comes along that just makes you feel good, that makes you feel like you've discovered something delightful that might be overlooked.

This season, this is that show. Sure, it features TV's new favorite character -- the awkward white girl -- but it does so in a winning way.

Mamie Gummer (Yes, she's Meryl Streep's daughter but there's more to her identity!) plays Emily who we meet as a geeky high school girl, one of those soulful misfits with a lot more on her mind than most will ever know.

What to Watch on Tuesday: A birthday bash and another debate

NC Gubernatorial Debate (7pm) - The second gubernatorial debate will air live on UNC-TV, WRAL, WTVD and WNCN (NBC-17) tonight. News 14 Carolina will broadcast the debate on delay at 8 p.m.

Hart of Dixie (8pm, CW) - Zoe discovers an error about herself in her alumni magazine, so she invites the reporter to town to set the record straight.

Raising Hope (8pm, Fox) - The Chances' plot to spring Maw Maw from a nursing home hits a snag when Virginia begins to wonder if she'll receive better care there than at home.

Ben and Kate (8:30pm, Fox) - Ben (Nat Faxon, left) throws a party to celebrate Kate's 21st birthday and invites her high-school friend Molly to the bash. Kate (Dakota Johnson, left) is only 21. That explains a lot.

Presidential Debate (9pm) - The second debate between President Barack Obama and former Massachusettes governor Mitt Romney airs on ABC, CBS, NBC, UNC-TV, C-SPAN, Fox, Fox News, CNN and MSNBC.

Emily Owens, M.D. (9pm, CW) - In this new CW drama, Emily Owens, an awkward first-year intern at Denver Memorial Hospital, tries to balance work with romance. Tonight, Emily (Mamie Gummer) begins her internship and discovers her old high school nemesis working there, as well as a guy she had a crush on in high school. Adrienne reviews.

Sons of Anarchy (10pm, FX) - Jax presents a dangerous proposal to the club.

Covert Affairs (10pm, USA) - Auggie, Joan and Arthur call on an old friend to help free Annie from prison in Russia.

Flipping Out (10pm, Bravo) - Jeff and Zoila clash over her work responsibilities, so much so that Jeff considers firing her. Elsewhere, Jeff's client suspects her house is haunted, so Jeff spends a night there to prove her wrong.
