Pitt overcomes Xavier

BOSTON (AP) — Levance Fields pointed Pittsburgh in the right direction just in time — as usual.

For the second straight game, the orchestrator of the offense took the big shots himself, hitting a 3-pointer with 50.9 seconds left, then scoring off his steal as the top-seeded Panthers reached the regional finals for the first time in 35 years with a 60-55 win over Xavier on Thursday night.

Wisconsin bumps off Seminoles

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — After spending all night doing the dirty work on defense, Trevon Hughes got a more glamorous role at the end: Shooter of the crazy, spinning, bank shot with the game on the line.

Otherwise known as the game-winner for Wisconsin.

GREENSBORO — Binghamton appeared to find a few new fans at Greensboro Coliseum on Thursday night — and they were wearing Carolina blue.

But despite the Tar Heel faithful who stuck around from the first session to cheer against rival Duke, the second-seeded Blue Devils blew out the No. 15 Bearcats 86-60 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Duke will play seventh-seeded Texas, which beat No. 10 seed Minnesota, on Saturday in the second round. The game will tip off 30 minutes following the conclusion of UNC-LSU, which begins at 5:45 p.m.

Texas moves on

GREENSBORO (AP) — Once A.J. Abrams found his shot, Texas was ready to leave its recent struggles behind and move on in the NCAA tournament.

Abrams hit eight 3-pointers and scored 26 points to help Texas beat Minnesota 76-62 in the first round of the East Regional on Thursday.

Damion James added 18 points and nine rebounds for the seventh-seeded Longhorns (23-11), who hit 11 of 20 3s overall to win their tournament opener for the fifth time in six seasons. Texas had lost seven of its last 14 games dating to late January.
