ESPNU to air special on Duke basketball: 'The Last Great Game'

The title alone of this new ESPN special should cause some screeching or at least some serious eye-rolling among local Tar Heel fans: "The Last Great Game: Duke vs. Kentucky" airs Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. on ESPNU.

The 30-minute program, which is based on a premise set forth in Gene Wojciechowski's book of the same title, features former players, coaches and basketball analysts who argue that the 1992 overtime thriller between Duke and Kentucky was the last great game in men's college basketball.

Duke won the game 104-103 on a last-second shot by Christian Laettner.

There's insight from members of both ’92 teams, including Laettner and Grant Hill, as well as Kentucky’s Jamal Mashburn and John Pelphrey. Then-assistant coaches Mike Brey, Jay Bilas and Billy Donovan add their eyewitness accounts, while basketball analyst Len Elmore, who called the game for CBS, rounds out the discussion of the legendary game that propelled Duke to its 2nd straight National Championship.

Regarding ESPNU on Time Warner

Incidentally, Time Warner Cable's Melissa Buscher took exception to a rather snarky description of ESPNU on Page 1A of Monday's News & Observer — "otherwise known as ESPN Unavailable."

Actually, ESPNU is now available on Time Warner's basic digital tier — one notch up from standard cable — as channel 140 in our area. Digital basic, with more than 260 channels, will cost $71.95 a month under the new rates released today by TWC, compared with $43.71 for the standard cable lineup of up to 74 channels.

DirecTV, a satellite television provider, offers ESPNU as part of its premier package, with 265-plus channels for $81.99 a month for 12 months.

The "ESPN Unavailable" label carried more validity when ESPN first launched the affiliated network than it does now, at least in the Triangle.

Turns out N.C. State's football game at Duke this Saturday, for those who don't actually go to the game, will be available only via video streaming on ESPN360.com, which also had exclusive coverage of N.C. State's 27-24 loss at Maryland. In all likelihood, The BrickHouse (formerly Playmakers) and other sports bars will hook up computers to their big screens and show it.

Here's the schedule for next weekend:

Thursday, Nov. 6
Maryland at Virginia Tech, ESPN, 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 8
Georgia Tech at North Carolina, Raycom (WRAL in Raleigh), noon
NC State at Duke, ESPN360.com, 3:30 p.m.
Virginia at Wake Forest, ESPNU, 3:30 p.m.
Clemson at Florida State, ABC, 3:30 p.m.
Notre Dame at Boston College, ESPN, 8 p.m.
