New cooking and mixology school in Durham

Durham Spirits Company, a cooking and mixology school, had its grand opening last weekend. Yesterday, I had a chance to chat with owner Katie Coleman, a culinary instructor at The Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham.

Coleman, who graduated from the College of Charleston and the Culinary Institute of America, moved to Durham in January 2010. She decided to turn a historical house at the corner of Trinity Avenue and Elizabeth Street into a school for home cooks. She says she wanted to teach people how to cook in a kitchen similar to their own and focus on using local, seasonal ingredients.

The hands-on cooking classes cost $59 and usually include a three-course meal. The cocktail courses cost $49 and follow one of three formats: a liquor tasting, classic cocktails or a "Garden to Glass" series on creating seasonal cocktails.
