DAE announces school board endorsements

The Durham Association of Educators recently announced their endorsements for the upcoming school board elections.

Below are the candidates the group supports and reaction from DAEPresident Kristy Moore:

District 1 (three candidates)

Omega Curtis Parker

"It's important that a school board member is in the schoolbuilding and see what's going on in school and have conversations witheducators."

District 2 (two candidates)

Fredrick A. Davis

"He believes that Durham has a long way to go in terms ofstudent achievement. He recognizes the needs in Durham."

District 3 (two candidates)

Nancy Cox

"She's very well informed about what's going on in education atthis time, as well as she's a former educator, which means a lot."

District 4 (four candidates)

Steve Martin

"He knows the budget. He knows how to read the budget. He knowshow to explain the budget."

Keeping the incumbents will help the incoming superintendent adjustto Durham Public Schools, Moore said.

"We feelwith Omega, Fred and Steve, with a new superintendent coming in, it would helpwith that transition, having three experienced school board members onthere," she said. "We wouldn't want a lot of change at onetime."

Rally-walk-vote

The Durham Association of Educators is holding a political rally and “walk to the polls,” along with a wellness fair, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Durham School of the Arts.
