Duke football offers WR Cordell Broadus—Snoop Dogg's son

Duke already has one recording artist's son on the roster. Now the Blue Devils have offered another.

The coaching staff has extended an offer to Class of 2015 WR Cordell Broadus, better known as Snoop Dogg's son (note: apparently his name is now Snoop Lion, for what it's worth). Hud Mellencamp, son of John Mellencamp, is a rising sophomore walk-on DB for Duke. He did not appear in any games last year.

The 6-foot-3, 185-proud Broadus, a Diamond Bar, Calf., native, also has offers from UCLA and Washington, according to Rivals. Check out his highlights above.

A brief interruption from basketball season to call your attention to a few football-related matters:

••• Spring practice started Monday for the Blue Devils, and there are plenty of changes underway. Here are five questions that need answered, and here's a report from the first day of practice.

A few more notes from that first day:

• OL Takoby Cofield (illness), OL Dave Harding (surgery), early enrollee QB Parker Boehme (surgery), DL Kenny Anunike and S Anthony Young-Wiseman will be limited and/or miss part of spring practice.

• WR Brandon Braxton (surgery), QB/TE/WR Brandon Connette (surgery), DL Justin Foxx and early enrollee LB Dominic McDonald (surgery) will definitely miss all of spring practice.

• The Blue Devils have noticed that they have a favorable schedule next season.

Early enrollee Dominic McDonald to miss spring practice

Stop me if you've heard this before: a Duke defensive player is injured.

Continuing a trend from last season, LB Dominic McDonald, an early enrollee, underwent surgery Monday to repair a torn medial meniscus in his right knee. He will miss Spring practice.

McDonald flipped his commitment from Tennessee to Duke in December and arrived on campus in January, hoping to get a jump on preparation for next season. He could compete for playing time at one of the weaker positions on Duke's roster, but missing spring practice will be a significant setback for the three-star recruit.

Duke football completes 2013 staff

With Spring practice set to start Monday, Duke football has its coaching staff in place. Head coach David Cutcliffe assigned the last remaining open position, recruiting coordinator, to Zac Roper. In addition to serving that job, Roper, who is entering his sixth year on the staff, has also been promoted to special teams coordinator. Roper is the brother of Duke's offensive coordinator, Kurt, and played for Cutcliffe at Ole Miss.

The school also officially announced the promotion of Re'quan Boyette to running backs coach. Boyette, who played at Duke and graduated in 2009, had been a graduate assistant, and his promotion was previously reported Saturday.

Updated 4:30 p.m.

Durham—All the faxes are in, and Duke football can now officially welcome its class of 2013. In total, the Blue Devils signed 20 prospects, four of whom enrolled in January and are already on campus. The full list is below.

The theme of the class can be summed up in one word: Playmaker.

"It’s pretty cool that a lot of them played and started on both sides on their high school teams," head coach David Cutcliffe said. They were the leading players and playmakers on both sides of the football. I personally paid a lot of attention to that as we started offering people in this class. Guys that don’t make plays in high school aren’t going to make plays in college.

"If they run great times in a combine and they jump well and they impress people standing there watching them doing drills, and they won’t make plays in the ball game, then I’m not very interested in them."

Currently, Rivals ranks Duke as the No. 11 class in the 14-team ACC (welcome, Pittsburgh and Syracuse) and 67th overall. The star rankings for each prospect also come from Rivals. Earlier today, I asked Cutcliffe how much he pays attention to the star system during the recruiting process.

Duke head coach David Cutcliffe announced in a statement Wednesday that four incoming players have enrolled early and started taking classes. They are:

Parker Boehme, a three-star, dual-threat quarterback, who threw for 3,202 yards and 40 touchdowns as a junior and earned all-state recognition. His senior season was cut short due to a toe injury. Boehme, who measures 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, hails from Jacksonville, Fla., and attended Sandalwood high school.

Defensive back Evrett Edwards is a three-star recruit from Woodbridge, Va. The 5-foot-11, 175 pound Edwards also played wide receiver in high school and posted career totals of 107 tackles, 10 interceptions and 21 pass breakups.
