What's in a name? Consider Duke Park --

City Manager Tom Bonfield said last month that City Hall could chip in $150,000 toward renovating the derelict and deteriorating bathhouse at Duke Park for a neighborhood community center.

Barfield didn't say just when the chipping is going to be done -- in any case, not until the Duke Park Preservation Initiative Inc. raises some money of its own -- but Duke Parkers are already exchanging emails about what they'd like to see in the remodeled product: kitchen, skylights, solar hot water, PA system -- the list is still under construction.

One suggestion has nothing to do with hardware, but a lot to do with image: changing the name from "bathhouse" to "Beaver Lodge" -- in honor of the neighborhood's annual Beaver Pageant.

Yes, there is a double entendre there -- maybe a triple.

Man charged with indecent exposure at Duke Park

Robert Thomas Perry, 57, was arrested Friday on charges of indecent exposure. Two witnesses told police they saw a man exposing his penis at the park and filed a complaint.

Perry, whose address was listed as 8 Caspian Court, was released on $1,000 bail and given a court date of Oct. 28.

When contacted Sunday, Robert Clark, one of two witnesses who made the complaint, declined to comment.

Calls to Perry's residence were not returned Sunday.

Where not to Park

For a couple days now, a discussion has been brewing on the Duke Park neighborhood listserv on the rights and wrongs of parking on residential streets.

The conversation was prompted by a Glendale Avenue resident angered by a parking ticket received for parking "left side to curb", which essentially means parking your car facing traffic rather than on the right side, with traffic.

Sgt. Dale Gunter of Durham police chimed in this morning with his explanation. It's worth a read, so check it out:
