Triangle swimmer qualifies for Olympic trials

Triangle swimmers don't just compete in the area. Some of them make a splash on the regional and national scenes.

Victoria Mitchell of the Marlins Of Raleigh-Wolfpack Aquatics is one of those swimmers with big achievements, and she added another this past weekend.

Triangle teams dominate Tar Heel States Swim Meet

Led by the North Carolina Aquatic Club, teams from the Triangle swept the top six places at the Tar Heel States Swim Meet held July 30 through Aug. 1 at the Triangle Aquatic Club in Cary. NCAC, the host team, took first place with 3,070.50 points. Second place went to the Raleigh Swimming Association (2,808). Duke Aquatics (2,712.50) was third, followed by YMCA of the Triangle Area (2,280), the Marlins of Raleigh Swim Team (2,337) and Wake County's New Wave Swim Team (1,439). More than 600 athletes from 20 teams from across the state competed, assistant meet director Jack O'Donnell reported. (Team scores and high-points scorers are below.)

Triangle athletes swim to strong finishes at Peter Vanderkaay-led Charlotte Ultraswim

Triangle swimmers, with the women leading the way, produced top-10
finishes and a variety of junior- and senior-nationals qualifying times
during the highly competitive Charlotte UltraSwim meet held Thursday
through Sunday and hosted by the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club at the
Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.

In the top individual finish, Duke Aquatics' Ashley Twichell, 20, was
seventh in the women's 1,500-meter freestyle in 8 minutes, 53.54
seconds, a time that qualifies her for the U.S. senior nationals.    

The YMCA of the Triangle Area's men's 400-meter freestyle relay team had the top finish among Triangle competitors.

Triangle athletes swim to strong finishes at U.S. Open Championships

The Triangle as a variety of year-round competitive swim teams,
many with links to area university clubs.

Several of the senior
swimmers from those organizations produced impressive results against
an international field at theU.S. Open Swimming Championships, a long-course meet held Aug. 4-8 at the King County Aquatic Center in Seattle. ( Complete meet results.)

Mason
McGee of the Marlins of Raleigh Swim Team/N.C. State Aquatics swam to
two top-seven finishes on Saturday, the meet's final day.
