What to Watch on Saturday: 'Downton Abbey' creator takes on 'Titanic'

Titanic (8pm, ABC) - The three-hour opener of a new miniseries that uses real and fictional characters to dramatize the events leading up to the luxury liner's sinking in 1912. Tonight, tension between First and Second Class passengers, and a Catholic engineer from Belfast looks forward to his new life in America. This is from Julian Fellowes, the creator of "Downton Abbey." Fellowes gives his upstairs-downstairs treatment to the Titanic story, but the buzz isn't as strong as it was for "Downton." But -- it has Linus Roache (right)! The one-hour conclusion airs tomorrow night at 9.

Must Love Cats (8pm, Animal Planet) - In the season finale, John Fulton visits a kindergarten for kittens (awww!) and cats that help prison inmates.

The Firm (9pm, NBC) - Another random episode of "The Firm!" Mitch and Ray meet with Andrew, who offers to help expose Kinross and Clark to the FBI. Meanwhile, Abby tries to prevent the next murder, and Mitch prepares to take on Kevin Stack. If my math is correct, two more episodes after this one.

Tanked (9pm, Animal Planet) - Season 2 opens with Wayde and Brett visiting a familiar client in New York to install a shark tank in an orthodontist office.

The first task of the season has teams running a midtown sandwich shop for a day. We'll post recaps of the major action from each episode here at Happiness is a Warm TV for at least as long as Clay sticks around.

A Bernie Mac Tribute: 'I Ain't Scared of You' (10pm, Comedy Central) - A salute to the late Bernie Mac features footage from early performances and rembrances from family, friends and colleagues. Here's Adrienne's review.

The Walking Dead (9pm, AMC) - Rick, Glenn and Hershel find themselves trapped and facing a battle for survival against an army of foes, both dead and alive. Shane attempts to rescue Lori, but I think we can all agree it'd be best if he just left her on the road with the zombies.

Scheduled to perform: Adele, Paul McCartney, Coldplay, Rihanna, Foo Fighters, Taylor Swift, the Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen, Tony Bennett, Carrie Underwood and many others. Our own David Menconi will be live-blogging the event and tracking how our local nominees do.

The Walking Dead (9pm, AMC) - The second season resumes in the aftermath of the bloodbath (wait, do zombies bleed?) at the barn. Rick tries to restore order and a devastated Hershel turns to the bottle for solace. Some new characters are introduced tonight, including a shady traveler played by Michael Raymond James ("Terriers," "True Blood"). James' scenes have the feel of a tense, classic Western. He's a welcome addition to the show. Can we swap him for Lori?

Downton Abbey (9pm, UNC-TV) - The Spanish flu sweeps through the household infecting Cora, Lavinia and Mr. Carson.

Desperate Housewives (9pm, ABC) - Susan is shocked when Julie returns  home very pregnant, and Bree's drinking and lust continues unabated.

Luck (9pm, HBO) - Jerry pursues a deal to buy the horse that Renzo lost to Mulligan while also talking to Escalante about training it. I've been on the fence about this show, and reports that horses are being injured and euthanized during production haven't helped me.

Comic Book Men (10pm, AMC) - A new series that looks at life in and around a New Jersey comic book store opens with manager Walt challenging the staff to a sales competition at a flea market.

What to Watch on Sunday: Super Bowl or Super Downton Abbey?

Super Bowl XLVI (6pm, NBC) - As if you didn't know: New England Patriots vs. the New York Giants in Indianapolis. Madonna performs at halftime. Someone convince me to pull for their team and I will. If football isn't your thing, and you've already seen all the great commercials leaked online, there's always the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet.

60 Minutes Presents: Three Remarkable Women (8pm, CBS) - Morley Safer profiles Meryl Streep, Anna Wintour, and Dolly Parton.

Downton Abbey (9pm, UNC-TV) - In episode 5, the household prepares for the war's end and the family looks forward to having a private home again -- unless cousin Isobel (Penelope Wilton pictured with Elizabeth McGovern) has her way. Also, in a remarkably "soapy" twist, a wounded officer makes a startling claim that could alter the Downton succession plan.

Luck (9pm, HBO) - In the second episode of the series (which has already been renewed for another season by HBO), Ace (Dustin Hoffman) meets with his parole officer and starts to line up potential investors as a public face for his next big venture. Also, Walter finds a seasoned jockey for his prized thoroughbred, much to Rosie's dismay.

Shameless (9pm, Showtime) - When Eddie Jackson's body turns up, Frank thinks he should be in line to claim his pension and insurance benefits.

The Voice (10:30pm-ish, NBC) - Season 2 debuts after all the Super Bowl hoopla, so the 10:30pm start time is fluid. Tonight is the first night of blind auditions, during which coaches Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton begin choosing 12 vocalists for their respective teams.

What to Watch on Sunday: SAG Awards and 'Luck' on HBO

Screen Actors Guild Awards (8pm, TNT and TBS) - This is sort of the stepchild of the major awards shows, relegated to basic cable and without any kind of host. But I'll still watch!!! Especially since tonight Dick Van Dyke will present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Mary Tyler Moore.

Luck (9pm, HBO) - HBO officially debuts their new drama series about the world of horse racing (viewers got a sneak preview in Decemeber). It stars Dustin Hoffman as an owner trying to get back into the swing of things after three years in jail. Also stars Nick Nolte. Written by David Milch and directed by Michael Mann. Here's Adrienne's review.

The Good Wife (9pm, CBS) - The last new episode we got ended with a bit of a cliffhanger, so I'm hoping for more insight into the whole Kalinda/Will con tonight. Also, Wendy Scott-Carr presents her evidence against Will to the grand jury, and when Alicia takes the stand, details of her relationship with Will are revealed.

Downton Abbey (9pm, UNC-TV) - In a really great episode 4, Matthew and William are engaged in a fierce battle at the front, and Vera strikes a cruel blow against Bates and Anna.

In the first, Duffy and Calderon (Kirk Aceveda, left) investigate the rape-murder of a young girl while Jane (Maria Bello, left) and Augie handle the shooting of a woman on the Upper East Side. Also, Jane has a heart-to-heart talk with Matt. In the second new episode, Jane learns that a jailed hit man may be responsible for a drive-by shooting at a local store, and Sweeney orders security when a hit is ordered on one of their own.

Oprah's Next Chapter (9pm, OWN) - Part 1 of a 2-part interview with "Star Wars" creator George Lucas at his Skywalker Ranch in California. Oprah also talks to Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard, stars of "Red Tails," Lucas' movie about Tuskegee Airmen.

American Idol (10pm, Fox) - You aren't reading that wrong: Fox  is showing a special episode of "Idol" at 10 p.m. And it's after the NFC championship game so it could start even later than that.

Californication (10:30pm, Showtime) - Hank finishes a draft of a film script, presents it to Samurai and proceeds to hit the road, but his attempts to leave hit a snag.

Pan Am (10pm, ABC) - While flying to Rome, Collette befriends a handsome, mysterious man and agrees to show him around the Eternal City. Also, Laura discovers that the Life magazine photographer sold the nude photos he took of her to a gallery, where they are on display.

What to Watch on Sunday: Gervais sure to offend (again) as Golden Globes host

Golden Globe Awards (8pm, NBC) - Ricky Gervais hosts again, so tomorrow we can all get together and either rave or complain about the job he did, and discuss whether any rich, beautiful movie stars got their feelings hurt. Morgan Freeman gets the Cecil B. DeMille Award and Raleighite Evan Rachel Wood is up for a Supporting Actress award.

Cloobeck. (I honestly hope these companies are paying CBS for their hour-long primetime commercials).

Napoleon Dynamite (8:30pm, Fox) - The premiere of a new animated series based on the hit movie, featuring the voices of the original movie cast. Amy Poehler has a guest performance in the opening episode. A second new episode airs at 9:30. Worth checking out? We have a review from a guest correspondent.
